Posted April 12, 200817 yr I could sit back and say nothing. But I can't. I got it wrong. Remember this photo. Well don't do what I've done with the corn. We have not proven it but 2 1/2 hours at a vet this morning after losing a bird yesterday, one this morning with two more going ill. One of which died to night and I have another one sick now as well. The autopsy on the bird that died this morning shows no Psittacosis , canker, mega or Cocci. But a very bad case of Bacteria Infection.. But how. I have a very high standard of cleanliness. The only thing it could be is the corn. ???!!!! I put the corn in Saturday afternoon and change it on a Wednesday. It MUST spoil during that time.. how stupid of me!!!! I have lost 3 birds and have endangered the rest of the flock. The birds are on medication for the next 5 days. With the last surviving sick bird on special medication. The bird that looks like it's become sick is on the same medication as the flock. I don't want to give him the stronger mediction unless advised by the vet. You have to be careful with every thing you do. Edited April 12, 200817 yr by KAZ
April 12, 200817 yr I'm so sorry for your losses Don't feel bad Thank you for speaking out. I now know to remove the corn with the other fresh food leftovers. Edited April 12, 200817 yr by **Liv**
April 12, 200817 yr If you smell corn over a day or two when it isnt refrigerated it sours very very quickly. I am lucky in that the corn I put in is gone in a few short hours and I then remove the empty cob. I dont serve any that smells sour. I am so sorry for your losses Daz....and its a great pity that you have sick birds and I hope they all get well very soon Edited April 12, 200817 yr by KAZ
April 12, 200817 yr Wow, Daz, thats not good. Good you caught it in time before you had majoe casualities.
April 12, 200817 yr Corn can be like that , some breeders say you should blanch it also before you feed it to kill any bacteria , I feed mine and remove same day . We just keep on learning Daz, Chin up
April 12, 200817 yr Author I was warned about the mung bean spouts but didn't think about the corn. It is so simple. Some people say everything has a lesson or a silver lining. If you find someone like that... buy them a beer and have a chat. I had a good chat to some one like that today and have posted another topic on it. >Link< Edited April 12, 200817 yr by Daz
April 12, 200817 yr thank you for sharing Daz, I know this is a hard lesson to learn and even harder to publically tell everyone what happened but because of you we all learned something new today and yet how to keep our birds safe, hugs.
April 12, 200817 yr Sorry to hear about your problems with the corn Daz. Best to just give them enough so that they eat it the same day, mine are the same as Kaz’s they jump on it & strip it clean in no time.
April 12, 200817 yr Sorry to hear about your losses Daz. Hopefully the others that are sick will pull through soon. We all can see how much time and effort you put into your birds and it is an admirable quality... There are plenty of bird owners out there that would not 'waste' money on having an autopsy done. They, unlike you, would more than likely lose the whole flock before they learnt the lesson. Thanks for giving us the information required even when it may (i personally don't think it does) reflect poorly on you. You said something to me the other week in a thread, you never stop learning you are right, and because of this you still have a flock. keep your chin up.
April 12, 200817 yr As you know Daz I went through this last week. It's so frustrating , I feel for ya mate! You hate to lose even one bird and with the smallish studs we have, we can't afford to either! Everyone has do deal with Mega at one stage or another it not reflection on anything, it's just a reality as bird breeders that we have to deal with. Good luck with the others
April 12, 200817 yr Thank you for bravely sharing Daz, so that others may know of the risk. I'm really sorry for the loss of your birds, and the personal cost to you
April 13, 200817 yr :budgiedance: Sorry to hear of your loss Daz, especially in warm temperatures, food can spoil very quickly. I always have an ice pack in my lunch bag even if it is just fruit. It was an honest mistake so don't feel badly about it.
April 13, 200817 yr Daz I am sorry for your loss mate ..... I too am lucky like Kaz it goes after a few hours ....
April 13, 200817 yr Author an update... The Yellowface is still with us and doing well. A dark green hen who is the sister to a national winner in Melbourne has joined him and a young Recessive pied hen has also joined them. This was yesterday. All are doing well and are on the medication. No other birds have shown the symptoms. But I do have a young light green hen that seems to have it's head in the seed bowl all the time and is losing weight. I have put all birds on the antibiotics even if they never had the corn. April 13, 200817 yr Its very hard for me to type with all my finger crossed for them Daz....but I am sincerely hoping for all good things from here on out for you. There has been enough losses
April 13, 200817 yr Author I am a positive person... I have to be. I lie the situation at the moment. The birds are a live (1) They are feeding and on medication (2) I am happy with the vet I saw (3) There has been no deaths today (4) All good points. The good out weigh the bad... this is good.
April 13, 200817 yr Thanks for sharing that with us Daz. I would not have known that it could kill!! Some months ago I gave mine half a corn cob each ... Charley hoes into is, but Maxie rarely does. I left it there for a day or so, began to smell something "strange" in the flat.. I kept changing their water, cleaning the fish tank, smell still there.. then I realised it was the corn! It had only been there about one or two days.. I never DREAMED it would go off so quickly!! Much less that it could kill!!! I'm sorry for your losses but perhaps by going public you have saved many others from making the same mistake!
April 13, 200817 yr l'm sorry for your loss glad to hear that the other budgies are getting better and you have not loss another one.
April 14, 200817 yr So sorry to hear you've had such a rough time Daz. Loss of birds & then sick ones & always worried & watching the others aren't sick too. I can imagine your stress level. Thanks for sharing such a serious sad lesson with us all. I really feel for you.
April 14, 200817 yr I too am sorry for your loss and grateful that you shared your new found knowledge. My birds usually finish their corn within a few hours, but on occasion, they havent eaten it all and I have just left it there for a couple of days. Thankfully I didnt have the luck you had and I have been fortunate enough to learn this lesson from you. I am glad they seem to be recovering and I hope they are all strong and healthy in no time at all
April 15, 200817 yr Author Well the birds in the flights have been fine. No other birds has looked sick. The ones on medication seem to be going okay. Even the one that saw the vet is still with us. Hopefully they are on the mends. Edited April 15, 200817 yr by Daz
