Posted April 12, 200817 yr Hello I kind of cut in on on Neat's topic yesterday (sorry :hap: ). My about four month old budgie has quite a sharp breast bone - it doesn't stick out, but when I feel it, it is very sharp. So, today I bought some scales and he weighs 34 grams. Is this about right for this age - or is he underweight? Thank you
April 12, 200817 yr Hard to say ...it varies between pet type and mutations as well. How about you post a few photos ?
April 12, 200817 yr It is hard to say. Like people, birds are all different sizes so what is healthy, over weight or underweight is hard to tell. I have never actually weighed my birds before. Did you use digital scales?
April 12, 200817 yr Author Sorry pics took a while, I lost the camera cable again :hap: Here are a couple of pics, if you need something better let me know. This one was taken a few weeks ago when he was outside and a little fluffed upOops, might help to copy the right link! It is hard to say. Like people, birds are all different sizes so what is healthy, over weight or underweight is hard to tell. I have never actually weighed my birds before. Did you use digital scales?Yep, I bought some digital scales this morning that measure 1 gram to 5 kg's in 1 gram increments. Very exciting, my cooking might taste a bit better now that I can actually measure my ingredients! Edited April 12, 200817 yr by Tam

He's a little stunner :hap: That is sooo good to hear , thank you Kaz . I was so worried about the little guy. I went down to the Fodder store this morning and bought him some hulled oats - are they still okay to mix through his seed?
April 12, 200817 yr Sure...give him some hulled oats. I usually step up the hulled oats prior to winter to put some condition on the birds for the colder weather.
April 12, 200817 yr As Kaz say he looks pretty healthy to me, he is still young, when he gets his adult moult, which looks like it will be soon, he will build up his body also.

April 12, 200817 yr He looks lovely..... Is his face a pinky/yellow colour???? Pink does not exist in budgies Liv
April 12, 200817 yr Author He looks lovely..... Is his face a pinky/yellow colour????Yes it is, I gave him a pinky/red calcium and iodine perch and it has stained all of his face As Kaz say he looks pretty healthy to me, he is still young, when he gets his adult moult, which looks like it will be soon, he will build up his body also.Good to hear He has a couple of really bright yellow feathers coming through on his cheeks (if budgies have cheeks!) so I think he may be starting his moult - or very close to it
April 12, 200817 yr A show breeder I know feeds his budgies grated beetroot amongst their soft food....you should see their faces !!
April 12, 200817 yr Mine do that too!!! He looks fine from what I can see. What a handsome little man. From what you've mentioned in the other post as to what he is being feed, you are doing all the right things...just add those hulled oats as Kaz said. It must be such a relief for you.
