Posted April 11, 200817 yr Hi , I'm thinking about going away for a day or two next weekend just wondering what's the best option for my budgie & what do other owners do as I live on my own ? Ive taken her to her previous owners in the past but they live on the other side of town from me and the enviroment is not perfect . There's a bird boarding house my vet recomended but they put the birds together and my bird is so adjusted to her own cage I couldn't do it to her plus couldn't they get infected ?? The other option is I get someone to call inn and feed & check up on her . She normally feeds from a dish and thought I'd install the tube type feeder so she wouldn't run out of feed plus would be cleaner . I thought a overnight she would be fine but two day's ??? Any suggestions ?
April 12, 200817 yr She would be fine. It is not like you are going overseas. I would simply make sure she has adequate food and water. In her cage I would make sure she has a couple of seed dishes, you could hand a seed treat as well if you are worried, a couple of water dispensers, you know the ones that hang on the oustide of the cage, and in the morning when you leave, give her a whole heap of spinach. I would only do spinach as when it goes off, it shrivels up and is no good to insects. Not all veges are like that. You might also sit a dish of seed in the bottom of the cage. Use something like a bird bath. I would not worry at all. relax, go and enjoy yourself. It will be fine.
April 12, 200817 yr Yep, great advice by Dave... Don't worry at all. If she's used to having you or noise around, maybe leave a radio on, and is she's used to be covered up at night, maybe half cover her? Up to you, but I think she'll be fine.
April 12, 200817 yr Don't know where you are but I am near Heidelberg, if you are really stressing and don't want to leave her she is welcome to come here for a holiday. I have other birds inside at the moment but the babies should be gone by then which only leaves my lorikeet and I can put her in a seperate room if necessary, but she has been an only bird for a long time so she is pretty well quarantined.ErinShould add that for that length of time I would happily leave my birds with no worries but it's really up to you and what you feel is best for your baby.
April 12, 200817 yr Liv how do you define quarantine? One only bird meeting another only bird seems like two quarantined birds to me... At any rate like I say she can go in my bedroom for the weekend. I would be concerned about this factor at a 'bird boarding house' Edited April 12, 200817 yr by melbournebudgies
April 12, 200817 yr I had this exact same debate with another member a few weeks ago (i was on your side and i lost hehe). I can't find the thread at the moment, but trust me, stay overs and play dates are a no no with out 30days quarantine. The birdy boarding house sounds horrible and I wouldn't use it Edited April 12, 200817 yr by **Liv**
April 12, 200817 yr Bt what are you quarantining them from? If they are both birds that aren't around other birds then they have been quarantined
April 12, 200817 yr Author Thanks everybody for the advise , I think she will be better off in her own enviroment , half cage covered as you say and plenty of food & water , she'll be fine she loves her cage & room , I'm not stressed . Thanks again .
April 12, 200817 yr There's a 'bird boarding house' out on Sydney Road... I've been thinking about checking it out, but I've gotta say I have bad pictures in my head even before going.... I just imagine a big cage with pets from 25 different places all crammed in... without quarantine..
April 12, 200817 yr Bt what are you quarantining them from? If they are both birds that aren't around other birds then they have been quarantined Each bird carries its own particular issues it can live with. Just as a bird may carry psittacosis and not actively show signs. Its is commonly known these days that birds carry many diseases and live with them UNTIL times of stress...like being caught, moved, new home, new seed, breeding etc. Just because a bird lives alone and then meets another bird that lives alone does NOT mean its is not carrying something it can pass onto the other bird with the stresses of moving and a new home for whatever period of time.

That's the one that was recomended to me , the owner used to work at the avian vet I go to and sounds okay , I phoned but they told me my bird will go in with other's . No good for my bird as she has special needs as she has a bad foot and would probally struggle in a strange cage , would have prefered if I could leave her there in her cage as it's all set up for her needs . Cheers . My birds getting cheekier by the day ! Edited April 12, 200817 yr by toohp
