Going From Pretty Tame To Not Very Tame...

My budgie's gotten a lot less friendly since I introduced a new bird (4-9 months old) to the cage. My first bird is about 1 year old, and he used to be tame enough to walk on my fingers, and walk right up to me happily, now he'll just play with the other bird a lot. Whenever I get my bird to step up (he will), he'll just fly away after 10 seconds. When I seperated him from the other bird, they'd cry for each other. Yet - when I take him to the bathroom for a small bath (about 100mL of water, supervised with my hand nearby), he'll be nice to me, and they don't cry for each other. Was it a mistake bringing the other bird home? Also, the other bird, despite being a child is nearly impossible to tame, it'll always fly away - here's something funny: when we got it, it'd just fly everywhere, it's wings weren't clipped - as well, the bird'll just bite out of nowhere. It doesn't really hurt anymore, but it's annoying. How can I make my budgie more tame if it just flies away whenever I try to go near it?

l would suggest you to clip their wings, just this once to help to tame them.

l do not personally like to clip my birds wings but l wanted to try and tame them, so l clipped both of their wings and that has really helped me to tame them. they still fly away from me when they have the chance but l can easily get them, if they had their wings not clipped l would have a hack of a time chasing them around the room :)

I had to personally clip their wings - there aren't any avian vets in the area even though its a metropolitan city.. and I don't trust the cat/dog vets. Anyways - they're wings are clipped, but I couldn't clip the old one's wings fully. I also trusted it >_>

edit: thanks for the welcome :hap:

Hi Dave

I know what you are going through. My first budgie George was tame when I bought him and was happy to sit on my fingers and allowed me to scratch his head from time to time. When I introduced my second budgie Franklin he changed and did not want to spend time with me. When I tried to get him to step up on my finger he wouldn't and rather sit close to Franklin. After a couple of weeks George went back to being his normal self again and would sit on my finger again and then Franklin became a bit more tame too. I think this behaviour could be a phase because your first budgie didn't have another bird as a friend for a long time and is very excited to now have one and wants to be with it all the time. I'd say give it some time and patience. Still try and spend time with your budgie by talking to it and being close to it. Don't try to force it too much to sit on your hand and gradually it could go back to being tame again.

How long have you had your second budgie for?

Well actually - I've had 6 budgies so far - 2 of them when I was in grade school (1 died, another flew away), and 2 budgies with my "first" budgie. Those 2 budgies somehow died (I had them seperately) suddenly. My brother + Dad blamed my current "first" budgie, however the new bird seems to be going okay.. I've had the new bird since January or February... I think it's kind of wierd what happened to my other 2 birds though...

I'm sorry to hear that. It is possible that your other 2 birds may have had an illness which they caught of each other. General signs to watch for that your bird/s may not be well is if they're fluffed up, sleeping alot in the day and lethargic.

Try feeding your bird millet from your hand. This may make your bird used to your hand again. It could motivate your bird to become tame again. Best of luck with getting your budgie tame again.

You have received good advice and all that I agree with especially the clipping of wings. I had the same thing happened to me Pretty was getting very bonded with me and then I got Merlin and I was chopped liver. I look at it and think well he would rather be a bird and with a bird then with me (Laughing out loud) so it is natural for this to happen. It is part of having 2 vs just 1 anyways, working with them together on a daily basis using the tricks that I outline in my FAQ article under Taming your Budgie and with patience you will see results. :D. Don't give up because they will get more untame. Welcome.

I actually fed my bird some millet a while back, took it to my room because(b/c) it wouldn't stay with(w/) me in any of the areas it actually knew. So - I took it to my room, gave it some millet, talked to it nicely. Everything went smoothly till the door opened.. But yeah, thanks for your advice :)
