Thank you for your replies.

It is wonderful to be able to get support when the vets are closed - i'd be totally oblivious to half of these illnesses and conditions if I didn't have this fantastic forum (with is highly talanted members) to turn to!!! :D

BG had a good night in his hospital cage. He is a bit more active today and cherping to the others. This cherp sounds different though.

I am hoping to take BG and my new bird to an avian vet today - i still haven't been able to get though to any one yet, so i will be calling around as soon as the clock strikes 9am!

baby Cookie is better now. He has been treated with raspberry cordial (25% pure) for the last 48hours and his poops have returned to normal :D - he probably had a tummy bug, or wasn't eating enough food. Kaz was an angel and helped me with him over the last few days - Thanks Kaz!!!! :hap:

I hope everything turns out okay LIV, I don’t think it’s Psittacosis I hate that word, not good to have & hard to remember how to spell but I’m very interested to hear what a vet says…hopefully you get one that knows what he’s talking about.

One sore eye is supposed to be one of the symptoms of Psittacosis, some birds only get that, but if you get it proper you will know it, as fluids come out both ends.

Thanks Norm. I hope everything is okay too.. his eyes are clear :o I really don't want to have to deal with that dreaded "P" word that I cant even pronounce hahaha

:( Fluids out of both ends -----> NO THANKS!!!!!

BG let me take a perfect photo

I have a avian vet appointment booked for the 2 birds at 8:40am tomorrow :D

Good picture Liv, I have had birds with more stain than that, but you say you actually saw Brown mucus coming out of the nostrils? I have never noticed that. I had thought it could have been blood stains coing from some of the small pin feathers. I have Red Factor Canaries & when some of the hens are in real good breeding condition, they get a Red colour near their nostrils not unlike this, so I had thought maybe it was a good sign. Hopefully we can learn a bit from each other, I hope the vet visit is productive.

Both Birds are getting new pin feathers coming though around their cere. They are only small and can only be seen when i brush the feathers the wrong way. My initial thought when I bought my new bird was it was blood stain from having a bad moult, or a fight.

BG's dark mucus is still there. It has dried now, but its that black patch below his right nostril.

BG has been defending the top of his nesting box this last week. His chick is the last to fledge before all boxes are out of the aviary. He might have been nipped, but it is really hard to tell as I don't see any wounds and i really don't want to go touching that dark muck in case it's infectious.

;) my avian vet has called in sick with gastro and won't be in until at least Thursday

They have referred me to the dodgie "Avian" vet that Mag used and did that bad clip of Spikes wings.

Will this appointment wait until Thursday or Friday??? or is it better to see this other vet sooner????

BACK FROM THE VETS

And he was an avian vet!!

:bluebudgie:

BG has a upper repertory infection (sinusitis) and an abscess on his cere (that black mark that I thought was mucus).

My new bird is under weight and has had a repertory infection recently.

He tested their poop - All clear :D

He listened to their heart and lungs - All Clear :D

Treatment = 10 days of Avicycline C (which i was already giving them) :D

He demonstrated to me how to crop feed and explained the realaties of Psittacosis. He said that Psittacosis most commonly starts with a sore eye and bright green poop (which neither of my birds have **PHEW**) - he also said that he sees Psittacosis in his clinic all the time and in 20 years of working with birds, he has only known of one nurse to get conjunctivitis from the bacteria. :D

As you can see i am REAAAAALLLLYY relieved :D:D:D

Thanks so much for all your support and advice

:wine

Thats fantastic news Liv. I am glad all is well, well it WILL all be well in only a week or two and there is nothing serious wrong. I am also jealous that you had someone show you how to crop feed! I am still working on that one. Though I havent really had to do it yet, I so want to learn for when the need arises and I am pretty sure it will!

Anyway, nice to hear your birds and family are all doing fine :bluebudgie:

I was going to say good news , but a sick bird isnt good ,but knowing what it is is good, Sinustis and Strep infections are all linked with problems with the respitory system , be very careful with this as dust can be the carrier , the infection can be carried on dust particles and even the budgies down feather so cleanliness is the key to stop any spreding

Also with this , I was wondering if you have experienced any yellowbelly when breeding , thats where the chick dies within two days of hatching.

Its a theory ive got and you may help me with it.

thanks. and Goodluck.

Lonebudgie - Thanks for the info. I am still keeping strict quarantine and being careful when handling the birds etc. BG and my new bidgie are quarantined from eachother too, so they were in different boxes and i made the vet look at BG first :wine

The vet said to lightly mist the cages/aviary with water before cleaning to stop dust, and to wear a mask.

Yellow belly - Nope, i have had no chick deaths except once last year when 6 chicks died all on the same -4 degree night :bluebudgie:

Sunnie - Thanks! I am very relieved :D The vet only demonstrated Crop feeding to me, so i didn't get to go it for myself, he was probably worried that if I injured my budgie that I would sue him. It looks fairly easy and I felt what the needle feels like when it's in the crop etc :D

Edited by **Liv**

The important thing with using a crop needle liv, is once over the tongue and going down the side of "mouth" area...let it finds its own way without any kind of pushing and it should all be well. Practice makes perfect :bluebudgie:

  • Author

He also said that any food/meds that are to be given via crop needle, needs to be drawn up the needle initially to ensure there are no particles that will block the needle once it is inserted into the bird :(

that is great to hear that it is not psittacocis,i hope your birds recover quickly for you

LIV I bet your are relieved it's not the P word ......

Just a quick note too ....Vitamin A deficient birds are more prone to respiratory infections, as well as skin and liver problems.

Vit A vegetables for budgies are carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, butternut squash, mango ...

Food for thought

I think they will recover fast- yesterday BG was huddled next to his heat lamp in the hospital cage looking very sorry for himself :( - today he hated being in the hospital cage so i moved him into a medium sized cage and he has been flying, climbing eating etc - SOOOO MUCH BETTER :(

LIV I bet your are relieved it's not the P word ......

YOU BET! :D

RE: Vit A - I doubt it. my budgies have permanantly orange faces from carrots - They LOVE them!!! I am thinking it is due to the up and down weather we have had in the last week.

Edited by **Liv**

I am sooooo glad to hear that your babies are okay :( Good luck with the recovery :(

Glad to hear that he doesn't have the "p" and I hope that the respiratory infection was caught in time and he will be okay. :)

Glad to hear that your problems weren’t as bad as feared & only of a minor nature & should soon be fixed.
