Posted April 10, 200817 yr I have a baby budgie has been handreared from about 4 weeks on he is about 6 weeks old and seems to be getting addicted to the formula he wont eat millet or egg and biscuit or anything any ideas? And also what should i be feeding the breeding budgies? They seem to be bored with egg and biscuit and greens but they wont eat carrot or apple?
April 10, 200817 yr Have you tried holding back on the feed by half an hour or so until he gets just a little hungry? Budgie parents will start to refuse to feed the babies as they get older so they are forced to stop bumming off mum and dad and eating on their own. What formula are you using?
April 10, 200817 yr I'm with melbournebudgies here ......start "starving" him a little. You got to be cruel to be kind. In the container or nest or whatever you are keeping him in put millet sprays. Some of my fledged babies that decide to go "backwards" a few steps in development...the ones that get "depressed" and stop eating...I put an icecream tub down for them to sit in with a cutout so they can get in and out at will..I fill the bottom of this container with seed and not nesting materials. Baby budgies in the nest will peck at whats on the floor of where they are...so the delayed development of some of my babies is helped by the seed under them...and also other slightly older fledged babies too who show them how to eat. Once they start to peck at the seed...out in the cage they get flat trays of...mashed boiled egg mixed with budgie starter, finesliced greens and grated carrot with seed sprinkled over the top. I also put a corncob in there too. They all seem to know its food and get into it. Even the ones I least expect to eat...a few hours later their faces are stained by obvious carrot and green vegie stains proving they ate some of it.
April 11, 200817 yr Author The baby is fostered and i am not sure how old he is as he was given to me but he is in a cage now fully feathered and flying but he constantly seems to be running back and forth on the bottom of the cage im not sure if hes hungry or if he just wants a scratch? I wil try the egg and vegies and see how he goes none of my birds like carrot for some reason?
April 11, 200817 yr Do you grate your carrot and serve it with things they do like ? Doesnt take long for them, to decide they like carrot that way.
April 11, 200817 yr Mine have a shallow plastic container on the floor of the cage with grated carrot, a little grated celery, coated with egg and biscuit and sprinkled with a little seed to give them the idea.Just a thought bt he sounds to me like he might be trying to find a place to hide, have you tried ptting a little box on the floor of the cage and seeing if he goes in it. He might feel insecre in the big open cage without any other budgies for company. Cover the cage with a sheet and just leave the front open until he gains some confidence.
April 11, 200817 yr Missylu is this the one inside ....... Is he still using the igloo we made???? Remove the shavings and replace with some seeds .... Try like Kaz and Melbourne said - grate vegies up and sprinkle with seed I found that the first 2 times using millet was better when introducing vegies .....
April 11, 200817 yr The reason he is not cracking seed,he is over feed on mash,Don't feed him any soft food, just a few rolled oats, better still, hulled oats with a small amount of seed.Put it inthe cage in the morning, there is a fair chance he is eating it by night fall,If you have another budgie, put him in the cage & he will teach it to eat seed.
April 11, 200817 yr Author He is too big to fit in the container we made and he doesnt like it anymore i think the reason he is running back and forwards is that he just likes to be out of the cage with me he is very attached and loves to sit on us and get a scratch.im going to buy some more millet tommorow and try the mix of things you guys ahve told me too thanks for all your tips
