Thank you for everyones advice, i did not think from one simple question that there would be so many different ideas.

And a Budgie eating chicken is basically cannibalism. Bird eating bird… which is often, what some of mine try, as I’ve found if you have a bird that dies, if you don’t see it quick it gets mauled by the living. Sweet little things our Budgies.

In some parts of the world humans eat monkeys... now if you adhere to Darwins theory that would also be cannibalism... I don't see many crazy people around though.... :(

Great thread guys Its interesting to get the different points of view...

Yes but in the parts of the world where cannibalism is /was practiced until recently there have been edcation programs to try to encourage them to stop. Why? Because they were contracting the human equivelant of mad cow disease from the consumption of the brain tissue of their dead and they were literally going CRAZY!

I think the message is that if you want to feed protien in this way it needs to be done carefully to ensure diseases are not spread.

Cannibalism is one species eating the same species - it is extremely simple for diseases because that's what they're adapted to. But there is something called a species barrier. In Darwin's theory, monkeys and humans are NOT the same species, they're not even in the same Family.

I used to have this argument with my friends about seagulls eating chicken. The group called 'birds' is made up of thousands of different species, Genera and Families. Seagulls and chickens are classed under 'birds' the same way humans and pigs are classed under 'mammals'. If a seagull eating chicken is cannibalism then so is a human eating cow or pig.

Feeding chickens to chickens on the other hand, to me that's a complete no-no.

Just being a little nitpicky there. :D

OHHHHHhhhhh YUK!!!! Melbournebudgie Eww Ewww EWWWWWW!!!

I am about to have dinner and all of a sudden, i am not so hungry ***Put nauseated smiley here***

I'm thinking about getting a job with Weight Watchers, I'll just stand there and dole out disgusting information until people get skinny :D

Trust me I can do better than that! ;)

hahahaha!!!! Forget Weight watches!! Lots of people would loose weight with your disgusting information hahaha - you could make a living out of it! for all of those where dieting dosen't work, just gorse them out so much they cant stand the sight of food hahaha.

okay ... how did this topic get from innocent shell grit, to cannibalistic grotesque weight loss techniques hahaha ;)

Sorry Deb :D

So if I have a mineral block in the aviary should I also be supplementing in their water?

:D

I normally use one or the other, but thats just me.

I worry about over doing it as they get lots of vitamins and minerals from all the fresh food they get too.

Mine dont get supplements in the aviary...they just get tons of very, very good seed. Lots of vegies, .....big variety and often. Natural branches and leaves. The breeders get supplements for 2 weeks before breeding in the breeder cage before the nestbox goes on.

I guess if we carried the cannibalism thing to extremes we shouldn’t be feeding hard-boiled egg in the soft food.

All I do with my birds is feed a mixed variety of seeds, some grit & sand, cuttlefish when available. The only additive I place in my water is a little Apple Cider Vinegar. Soft food almost every day in the aviary & breeding cabinets. Soft food contains Chicken starter, for added protein & additives [less expensive than Budgie starter] Arrowroot Biscuits & Shredded Wheatmeal Biscuits, hard-boiled eggs, now & then a very small amount of Tincture of Iodine, dissolved in water, Corm nibblets & grated carrots. Some of my aviaries don’t receive direct sunlight. But I give almost daily lots of wild Greens; seeding grasses [mostly Green Panic, which I grow] my main weed is Farmers Friend, as it’s my most common weed, so gotta make some use of it. Suppose to be high in Magnesium. Milk thistles & some weeds I don’t know the names of. In winter Silver Beet.

I have the materials to make mineral blocks, but still haven’t got around to that.

I don’t see any mineral or vitamin deficiency, only the occasional soft shell egg. I loose a few birds, but I think this impossible to completely stop, all that live must one day die.

Mostly I have healthy babies, mostly at least four up to eight or nine in a batch. Eggs mostly at least six on occasions up to 8 to 10. On the whole I think my birds are healthy, without all the expensive additives. I have improved pet types & show birds.

They also recieve Eucalyt braches.

Norm...tell me how to get chicken starter and what brand to look for ?

Kaz, chicken starter sometimes called chicken crumbles is easily got from any stockfeed place.

Thankyou :D

Norm this may be a very dumb question, I'm tired and I apoligise, but are these the addatives that you put with the chicken starter or are there other additives ??

Hi Norm

What percentage crude protein and what percentage crude fat is there in chicken starter.

I have Vetafarm Budgie and Finch Crumbles and it has 19% crude protein and 7% crude fat in it.

Thanks

I mix up a large amount each day, so it’s hard to tell you the exact amounts. This is the basic mixture… one Arrowroot Biscuit, one Shredded Wheat meal biscuit, one hard boiled egg, I use a small Tuna tin to measure the chick starter, it’s medicated chicken starter, it has a Coccidiostat added…the mixture I make is four times this so the same amount would be a quarter of a tin of starter. Then some grated carrot & corn nibblets, the amounts aren’t critical so just judge what you think is a good mixture, I use frozen corn nibblets, as I think it’s cheaper than corn on the cob & less waste. As corn has gotten more expensive. I pour boiling water over the frozen corn to thaw it while I’m making the other ingredients, then drain the excess off…the iodine is just a couple of drops in enough water to moisten the mixture, be careful don’t over do it, as too much iodine will be toxic, I only use it once or twice a week…they don’t like it if it’s too wet just crumbly. I rub it well together to mix it well, you could use a blender.

Sorry Derek, I can’t tell you at the moment as I just through the last label away the other day. Laying pellets are about 16% & this is more, I read on the net that a professor said there was too much Calcium in chicken starter Crumbles for Budgies, but I have been feeding it for years, after someone else told me about it & haven’t seemed to have any problems.

You can get it at any produce story Kaz, it's not cheap but nothings cheap these days, but I saw the small packets of Budgie starter & it was certainly cheaper than that. Of course it's not totally mixed with the exact ingredients for Budgies. I buy about five kilos at a time to keep it fresh. It's called Medicated Chicken starter crumbes.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to look into that... anything for less that is better is always a plus... :D

I wouldn't think it would be better than Budgie Starter crumbles which are Hopefully designed especially for Budgies, I use it because of easier availability & less cost.
