Positioning And Type Of Nest Boxes In The Aviary

Just wondering what preferences your budgies show for the position and type of nest boxes in the aviary? I have them scattered in all sorts of places, some up high, some lower down hanging on the wire. I'm still trying to work out what my birds prefer and moving boxes that don't get used much into positions they like better. I'm also going to try a few different options with boxes and natural hollow branches, etc. to see if they have preferences there.

Maybe I just like to spoil them too much :feedbirds: :)

Just what I needed! ThanksJust had a read, confirmed a few things I had already considered and gave me a few ideas I hadn't thought of. I particularly like the idea of putting little screens up and longer perches, I had been trying to work out how to solve this problem. I am going to suspend a bank of them in the middle of the aviary so they will be facing away from each other. Luckily we've never had any issues with this bunch of birds, they've lived together for a long time and they don't harrass each other.

Make sure your suspended ones are stable and do not move around. If they move there will be addled and broken eggs and a low hatch rate.

When I say suspended I mean on a timber frame as opposed to hanging somehow. I have also considered cementing a large dead branch into the floor of the aviary like a tree and bolting boxes to that in interesting positions.

That sounds like a creative idea. Birds normally prefere the top boxes and will tend to fight over the better box - location, location hehehe.

I however, had my colony breeding setup all wrong, but it still worked for me :D I seem to have very placid birds hehehe. I have finished colony breeding now :D
