Posted April 8, 200817 yr As my budgies live in a large group they kind of choose their own mates if they feel inclined to breed so I'm not always 100%positive who the pairs are. I have noticed that two of my blue greywings spend a lot of time grooming each other, moreso than the rest of the flock. Is there a good chance that these two have bonded and will tend to breed together or are budgies a little less monogamous than that?
April 8, 200817 yr Yes this sounds like they have bonded but in saying that males can bond to each other to (Laughing out loud) .... you'll know the Difference between getting ready for breeding and just affection ....Breeding behavior is fairly specific. The male approaches the female, usually chattering incessantly, and then rapidly tapping her beak. The tapping is also interspersed with him moving his beak up and down parallel to hers. Females illicit mating by raising their tail and lowering their head Edited April 8, 200817 yr by Neat

I hadn't noticed that these two were overly friendly with each other until today. At the moment just by annoying coincidence there are vastly more males in my aviary than females, so this little guy has sought out one of the few females to smooch with. They are constantly grooming each other around the face and giving each other smoochy beak kisses. Given I only put the budgie boxes back in on Sunday after taking them out to give them a clean I'm guessing they've seen the boxes and got excited! Might be more babies on the way
April 8, 200817 yr Author They don't seem to have picked a box yet so I'll keep an eye on them over the next few days.
