My Budgie Layed Two Eggs

Featured Replies

Posted

I have a little budgie that I saved from the wild. I believe it was a caged bird that got out cause she couldnt fly....now my little bird has just layed two eggs. I tried to make a little nest and put the eggs in there and she knock it over, the eggs are fine, sitting on the botton of the cage and she does sit on them.

This is my first bird so what can I do about the eggs, how do I make a nest for her? What should I do with my budgie nesting?

All tips please as I have no idea

Welcome , It is good to hear that you had save a bird, Please check any lost and found notices as someone may be missing her ..... So she has laid 2 eggs ( How long have you had her for ) in my opinion i would toss the eggs, as she is a found pet unless you are willing to help her ...Have you got a nest box? or a small cardboard box she may use strange that se is sitting on the eggs at the bottom of the cage ....

There are alot of advice and question and answers in the FAQ's regarding what to do and expect ...

Thanks for your prompt reply.I have had the bird for about four months now. I dont have the heart to throw the eggs away...what sought of help would she need. Im having a look at the FAQ now, how would I make a nest from a cupboard box, I want to do the right thing.

It appears you only have one budgie and its a female.....if so..........forget the eggs as they are not fertile. You need a male budgie for that to happen and there doesnt seem to be one ????

Yep thats right, only one budgie - i guess female - so are they just blank eggs?

We are wanting to get another budgie to keep this one 'company' so would it be okay to get a male budgie?

If you are wanting to breed then yes , I guess the sight of eggs got you and the kids excited (Laughing out loud) ..... There are a few things that you need prior to thinking about breeding like well balanced diet especially calcium and fresh geens and fruit you will see in the FAQ's what are the right food and what are the toxic food to feed ...... Then when you do get another bird QUARRATINE is your safest bet this will ensure that he will not pass any nasties on to your hen ... Have you got a picture of your bird welove seeing photo's here

We did get excited (Laughing out loud), we tried to make a nest for her but it didnt work. Its so cute she is sitting on her eggs, I dont have the heart to take them away even now I know they are empty (Laughing out loud)....No I dont have any digital photos of her just prints, when we found her she had been attacked by another bird as she had scratches. But she has healed well and seems happy....I feel I have done a good thing so I'm a bit protective of her.

What are birds like in the cold.. she's in a cage inside the house, I'm thinking of getting a large bird cage/aviary for her but how do I keep her warm?

thanks for your help I'm learning already!!!

I was reading about quarratine - had no idea about this!!

YEP....with no boy budgie they arent fertile and wont hatch. Leave them where they are but dont encourage nesting behaviour...like dont put nesting materials in or anything she can tear up and try and do anything with. If you take the eggs away she will keep laying more to replace them. As they are infertile she will eventually give up on them. So...........if you plan on adding another budgie....QUARANTINE of 30 days in another cage at least 5 metres away. I would not breed your girl unless you can be very sure she is old enough and NOT TOO OLD. A hen that lays eggs with no boys around is usually an older hen.

:)

My daughtr got excited the first egg she seen too ..... Firstly I am sooosorry i wrote mum in my welcoming (Laughing out loud) , i just noticed you were male :wacko:birds are adaptable to the climate changes after all Budgies are australian native birds .... if she is an inside bird and your wanting to breed ....LATER DOWN THE TRACK ..... just do it inside if you are concerned. a few members here have .... or you can get an out door avairy and use ( Blinds ) like those bamboo roller blinds don't forget to take it off .... in the morngin (Laughing out loud)

Sorry I am a mum - i just saw i did have male under my profile (im needing to go to bed (Laughing out loud))

From what I have read I wont worry about breeding with her, i think i will start researching more about it and just have her as my pet.

thank you so much for your help, i wont need to worry about her eggs now...

No worries ... ask us questions we are all here to help on another ....

Hello and welcome :D

You have had some great advice from Kaz and Neat :D

I just want to add. It might be a good idea to look up "Egg binding" in the FAQ's too. I had an older hen who laid eggs with no male and she got egg bound. I know your girl is fine at the moment, but knowing the symptoms could be good, especially if she is an older bird.
