I know you want to keep the spangle markings as defined as possible so adding the cinnamon gene is probably not the best idea. Though because cinnamon is sex-linked you will not get an babies that are cinnamon only the males will be split for the gene, unless the dad is carrying it and gives it to his hens therefore if you do get a spangle it can wash out the spangle marking. This is my logic, so I could be way off (Laughing out loud).

Yes and no...it can be a split to cinnamon with a visual cinnamon. Or two normal looking birds who are split to cinnamon.

No you have to have a male that is split to cinnamon and all his hen offspring will be cinnamon but if you want male cinnamons then both parents need to give the gene to the male offspring they will need 2 of the genes to visually show the cinnamon coloring. So that means the male can be split and bred to a cinnamon hen or you have 2 cinnamon birds.

Let me explain. The cocks will be split cinnamon. The hens will be normals unless the cocks are split to a sex gene.

The cinnamon gene adds a soft quality to the feather which is what you want in a show bird. The hen will carry the softness but not the cinnamon. If the hen if a well marked bird (even though she is a cinnamon) she will add to the spangle markings. Her daughters could be a better bird than she is. If the spange cock has a sister or brother that has sons you can pair the new daughters back to those sons to improve the line. Half Brother to Half Sister

 

This is called line breading and using a cinnamon out cross to improve a feature. In this case the feathering.

wow thats confusing so how do you know if they are split for cinnamon just the softness?

I thought I knew this answer: and the whole wishy washy effect but Daz never thought of that with feathering... Line breeding isn't that imbreeding and won't that cause defects?????

All cocks breed from a cinnamon hen and a "normal" cock will be split cinnamon.

It needs to be done properly with a good knowledge of the genetics of your birds. It does increase the chances of any hidden defects showing up in the babies but most of the time in a pair of healthy birds with no history of defects in the lines there won't be a problem.

I would not recommend linebreeding/inbreeding to a novice. I have read many article and sought many opinion on this subject. Done properly you can and will enhance the features of your birds but you need good knowledge of your birds genetic backgroung to even attempt this.

I think daz was just pointing out possibilities. I think the pairing should work out fine. Keep us posted.

 

As far as everything I have read in the books, in human terms you would call line breeding a form of inbreeding and it would cause serious medical problems... ie South Australian couple on 60 minutes the other week... but with budgies, if you have the knowledge and all the necisary information, it shouldn't be a problem... Just be careful that you don't fix a fault...

 

That said, I've only read books on it and never tried it myself... so I'm no expert

Just to help you on the cinnamon,a normal hen can't be split for cinnamon only the cock can.To breed good show birds you need cinnamon,plus the up side it is another class to show in.
