Weaning Hand Raised Budgie

Featured Replies

HI. we have a baby budgie we were hand raising. My step daughter is a new breeder and mother budgie stopped feeding this one. He is doing great, accept that he is about 7 weeks old and doesn't seem interested in eating much seed. We still have him on 2 feeds of formula a day because if we don't feed, he looks unwell and doesn't pick up until we feed him. any tips on how to wean him? should I be worried ?he flies about and seems very happy and healthy.

Weaning chicks. Provide adult type food to chicks once they are fully feathered or begin to resist being hand fed. To wean onto Pellets or crumbles, reduce the number of feeds and offer some moistened pellets in a dish. Once the chick starts eating the moist pellets, stop hand feeding and offer only dry pellets. Chicks will naturally lose some weight during weaning*i.e. Budgies should also learn how to crack and eat seed. Stat with a soft seed, such as millet and when they have mastered that start to introduce ordinary budgerigar mixes.

This if from our FAQ article you can read the full article HERE

I hope that helps, most of our breeders are sleeping right now so this evening you will find you will get more answers .

i started weaning my babies by hanging a millet spray on the side of the cage and when they walked passed it they would check it out.i found for some reason my would not eat the moistened seed but when i put millet seed in a shallow bowl in the bottom of their cage they took to it.

Sorry Elly I hate and won't use pellet mate

Hi. I do have millet hanging on the side of the cage. I also have seed in a shallow bowl at the bottom of his cage. He's fully feathered cause he can fly short distances but is not resisting being hand fed. He cracks seed sometimes but not very often.

thanks

Maria

Try putting the millet on the bottom of the cage, also offer some veggies cut up really small or blended together... corn, carrots, greens...

good luck with it. I can't really help with advice other than keep on trying different things that people suggest... eventually he'll take to food thats not from you...

I am no expert but I would think that all babies wean differently, continue to offer him seeds, veggies and a different varitiey of foods and I am sure as he continue to test things he is going to wean better each day.
