Posted April 2, 200817 yr Hey All ..... I remember that I have mentioned about having Red mites In my breeders Boxes and that I will treat them .... Sooo I finally got the Treatment that was recomended by My Avian vet "Coopex" ...... ( delay due to shipment not arriving as Missylu got the last one grrr) He advised me to make some into a paste and "Paint" the nestboxes ensuring that i get the joints and lips of the lids ..... okay so this is what i am Concerned about ..... 1 Nest box has 1 baby and the other has 4 eggs ..... The vet said that they would be okay when I done it and it wouldn't harm them at all ????? Can anyone tell me that they have INFACT treated their nestboxes / Breeding Cabinets with a Mite/lice treatment WITH YOUNG / EGGS in there ..... My last clutch of 5 all dies but 1 and I don't want this to happen with the next clutch ..... Thank you
April 2, 200817 yr The thing is if you don't treat for the red mites, this lot of chicks will also die.I would spray around the outside of the nest box, with black label fly spray & hope that stops them & any other spots the mites are liveing. :feedbirds:
April 2, 200817 yr wouldn't spraying flyspray be a bad thing around budgies?? Just thinking about the chemicals...

April 2, 200817 yr Flyspray?!?! I'm not keen on sprays of any kind. I'd go with what you avian vet recomended Neat
April 2, 200817 yr Thats okay,But you will have to get rid of the red mites, :hap: Sooo I finally got the Treatment that was recomended by My Avian vet "Coopex" That is what she has this for.
April 2, 200817 yr Author Yeah I know, But my QUESTION WAS Can anyone tell me that they have INFACT treated their nestboxes / Breeding Cabinets with a Mite/lice treatment WITH YOUNG / EGGS in there .....
April 2, 200817 yr I have a suggestion.....a few breeders "flame" their boxes to get rid of pests. Empty the nestbox, put rolled up newspaper in them and set alight. Allow it to flare and burn and then quickly remove the remaining contents. Others use a blowtorch. Of course, care must be taken not to set the boxes alight. :hap: I also suggest a dry run with a spare box as well to get timing right.
April 2, 200817 yr How would her current clutch be effected by that though... I'm guessing she would remove the current eggs/babies and mother before blowtorching the nest... :hap:
April 2, 200817 yr Author Ahhhhh KAZ thanks Heaps Mate .... CHEAP NON TOXIC ... So bascially Char the timber with out burning it ..... therefore only buring the surface and not getting in the grains of the timber and not erradacating the all the mites that live inside the wood ???.... this is my concern I HAVE SPARES which i was thinking about using however concerned for the Perches and Eggs and BABY ETC in the aviary with the Mites ... ... As the coopex soaks into the timber .... Edited April 2, 200817 yr by Neat
April 2, 200817 yr I'm guessing she would remove the current eggs/babies and mother before blowtorching the nest... :hap: It would help or you would have little miniature barbecued chickens Edited April 2, 200817 yr by KAZ

April 2, 200817 yr in order to keep everyone on this thread in unity we could maybe take a flyspray can and a lighter, turn the lighter on and then spray the flyspray into the lighter in the direction of the nest box... KAZ's blowtorch idea + Georges Flyspray idea = the first ever black budgies... wow!! What a future this hobby has with people like me involved... :yellowhead:

April 2, 200817 yr As soon as I read about the barbeque I also thought about Kaz’s omelettes…Back to the serious side…if you had red mites I would have used ordinary fly spray as an emergency solution, as red mites are bad news. No one uses less chemicals than me, but before Ivermectin the recognised treatment for air sack mites in Canaries was to place them in an inclosed space, spray quickly with low irritant fly spray & close it up for 5 to 10 minutes so that they breath in the spray. I never had any problems with it’s use, in fact I would suggest that Cooperex [which I have never used] would be far more toxic than the usual fly sprays use for humans, as hopefully there would be tighter controls on something that is used in many homes around children, food stuffs etc. The flame treatment would also be a good idea if used carefully [didn’t burn your house or aviary down] but red mites hide in every crack they can find & used alone I don’t think it would give total control.
April 2, 200817 yr Author This cooplex is used for everywhere homes kitches, food places pasture seed sowing so hence me not thinking it would be harmful???...... I'll save all the dramas and call 3 Avian vets 2day to see what they all say .. BUT AS YOU ARE ( most of you are ) Breeders I'd thought I'd ask here ....... IF i strip the aviary bare it might throw the mum's off and that is anothe concern ..... Gezzzz Dramas Dramas drama ... NEATS NEAST NEEDS SUPER CLEANING .... Norm I just couldn''t use fly spray on them If anything happened I'd be devestated ....... Well I'll post the results later ....
April 2, 200817 yr Let us know what the other avian vets say... Otherwise we should organise a bus to go around to everyones house pick them up and in a couple of weeks (thats how long it will take to pick everyone up) we'll all get to your house and watch the flame thrower in action... we could sing KOOMBAIYA as the flames burn the mites...
April 3, 200817 yr Author okay. Spoke to the Vet and wrote it all down this time .... (Laughing out loud) I have to make the solution up in both a paste and spray form ... 25g to 4 ltr of water ...... Empty nesting materials , Paint all the nooks and cranies and mist Nest box Let dry ..... and Mist new nesting material ....... This will then get onto the birds .... Mist all perches if not replacing them all .... and give the aviary a mist all over .... Taking out all food and water containers ..... And making sure not too directly spray birds as mat get into the eyes and Nose .... As the dilution is mild it is completyl harmless to the Babies and Eggs as well as the Birds ... However it can be made stronger and use around the house for Spiders, Fleas, Cockaroaches, Misquitos and etc .... No retreatment is needed but recommend that avairies be treated each season to prevent and TERMINATE any new ones. Didn't know that my Vet is a breeder too (Laughing out loud) and uses it as well ..... I have treated the 2 soare nest boxes and waiting for them to dry So I can then vac the avairy and treat it ..... Fewww Glad this is over, Not a hard as I first thought .... THIS WILL TEACH ME TO WASH ALL NEW PERCHES AND GUM LEAVES / BOTTLE BRUSH BRANCHES PRIOR TO USE ...... Thank you all soo much for your efforts and Help in this, Being blonde sure is hard sometimes I should have just rang the vet in the first place and not get myself worked up over it ...... On the bright side of this at least we all had a good laugh ..... JIMMY BUS TRIPS WELCOME BRING YOUR CAMPING GEAR THOUGH .... (Laughing out loud) and Marshmellow to roast on the blowtorch ..... Once again thanks guys where would i be without my BBC
April 3, 200817 yr Glad to hear it is much easier than first thought... Good luck with it. Hopefully its the last you'll see of the critters.
April 3, 200817 yr Glad you got the solution you were looking for, Neat. I sure got a good laugh up here in winter wonderland reading this thread. You guys crack me up
