Posted March 31, 200817 yr So the quarantine time is over and my two budgies Boris and Betty have moved in together. I;ve had Boris for over a year and Betty is a new edition. There is something strange in her behavior. she is a very quiet and looks like a shy birdie. They don't or barely ever fight and if ever than over a food dish (though they have three in their cage) or he shushes her off if i am giving him something from my hand like a herb or millet - he does allow her to eat it too if she is sitting at a good distance:). The strange thing about her is that she always seems to look up to Boris. if he eats what i give him she will eat it too (won't if i just give it to her first). If i touch him and he pecks me she does that too if i try to touch her too afterwards though not as confident as he does! as if she is just trying to do what he does. She follows him to every perch so they always sit together. He sings or chirps all the time, she barely ever does. So i just wonder if she is just a very shy and young birdie (though as we have established on this forum she is probably already around a year old) or is there something wrong or maybe you just have a good understanding of budgie behavior and share abit of it with me Oh yes i also noticed him grooming her sometimes so they seem to get along. it is just the quietness and shyness of the girls worries me (she eats alright and eats fruit and veg too fine (if he does too) ) there is a photo of my sweeties: Edited March 31, 200817 yr by Irisha
March 31, 200817 yr awwww....you have such cute Budgies and they seem to be bonding very well with each other l have 2 budgies also, male and female too. what l have noticed with mine, my female acts alot like yours. my male Hobbes usually is always the first to try something and then my female Claire will follow, but there are times where my female will be bold and be the first to explore a new toy or the first to the veggies, she will also come out of the cage first sometimes. l'm in the process of trying to tame them both even thou they are 2 years old, l was very surprised to see my female being the first to take some millet from my hand. so you never know, maybe in time your female will also surprise you and will be more bold then shy. every budgie has a totally different personality, that is what makes them unique Edited March 31, 200817 yr by birdluv spelling error

March 31, 200817 yr Seems fine to me. When I had my budgies paired, the younger budgie always copied from the older budgie (when i say older i meant the budgie who was living there first, not always necessarily age). What the older budgie ate the younger would eat, when the older would preen the younger would preen. I think it is because the budgies have that flock metality. They learn from the older members of the flock, how and when to do things and which things are safe to do and when. There is usually a pecking order too, so the older budgie is usually in charge and cooridates what the other budgie is allowed to do.
March 31, 200817 yr Author Thank you for the replies. Yes Pika, mine preen at the same time too, they are like in a mirror sometimes, doing the same thing together:) Funny birds! I am only abit worried that she is so quiet and "insecure" but i suppose she is still getting used to the surroundings and maybe "insecurity" is not such a big deal in the budgie world as it is in the human one
April 1, 200817 yr They look like such a cute couple. I doubt you have anything to worry about, she is possibly just adjusting to now sharing and eager to please. Anyway, they are very sweet
