April 8, 200817 yr Looks great DAZ. This thread gives me some great ideas for fixing up my old breeding cage for when I get back. Great photos as usual.
April 8, 200817 yr Hi Daz just an off topic question, :offtopic: do you construct your own show cages? If so can you start a new topic with this.
April 9, 200817 yr As an aside Daz, I have only just assembled and started using your nestboxes. The birds seem to like them and I like the fact its harder for them to remove the wood shavings.......so much less mess.
April 9, 200817 yr Author Also the chicks will stay longer in the nest getting force feed by the parents. This gived them a better start with feather productions. Â Â Update (no Photo) The first set is nearly finished. The only thing left is the trays. So this one will be going out to the breeding room to make way for the next one. I can put the trays in when there are ready.
April 9, 200817 yr Kaz, any pics of the fronts you have with wire mesh? Here are some photos of my new ones that are as yet unfinished. I have built some units of three horizontal breeding cabinets of melamine....with removable dividers so the cage is one long cage or three depending on needs. Between each cabinet space is a sliding wooden section, that locates in a slot at the back. This kind of set up is useful if you have one cock to serve three hens, if you want to try that out or also useful for a wide holding cage for birds ready for showing or even as a kindie cage for youngsters...when not in use as breeding cabinets. The section at the bottom of each cage is glass.....because I work with glass and its easy for me to do. Each section of glass slides out for ease of cleaning the bottom of the breeder cage. There is a good four inches of space there to reach in with a brush or vacuum nozzle to clean out while the birds are elsewhere in the breeder cabinet. The four unches of glass I am hoping will also stop a lots of debris coming out onto the floor. The cabinets are very large, around 600 wide by 600 deep by around 500 high. A square perch to the left ( rounded off ) and a round perch attached to the back of the nestbox going towards the back of the cabinet. Nestboxes are Daz's famouse nestboxes thanks to him sending them via Australia post in flat form and I assembled this end. The only modification I have employed with Daz's nestboxes are...I have now removed the top slider and replaced that with FIRSTLY a 3mm glass section that sits atop the bottom sliding door...then SECONDLY I have another sliding door ( 3mm wood ply ) sandwiched to the glass one...so in effect there are two doors making one. I lift the 3mm wooden slider and look in through the glass door. I can remove both as necessary. The glass one allows me to look and not disturb too much and also no escapes. Yet to complete is the finish ....the hinged access doors that will hinge under the nestbox. BUT I have been busy with work and the motivation to complete will come with the new birdroom going up, hopefully within the next three weeks. Â Â Â PS I have also made some vertical units of three. April 9, 200817 yr As an aside Daz, I have only just assembled and started using your nestboxes. The birds seem to like them :hap: and I like the fact its harder for them to remove the wood shavings.......so much less mess. Â Â KAZ/DAZ... (Laughing out loud)... is this because they are deeper... or is there another reason? Thanks :hap:
April 9, 200817 yr Author Yes the boxes are deeper from the access hole to the nest box floor. The chicks stay in longer. Hense they are feed more by the parents than if they were out in the cage. Â I f mine millet sprays in the nest box from the age of 3 weeks to get them used to cracking seed before they leave the nest.
April 10, 200817 yr Author Well I put the breeding cages into the breeding room tonight. Â Â Â A big difference from the exisitng ones. Â All I need know is the trays. Â But I know have room to start the next cabinet. Â By Sunday I should have finished the first 8 cages.
April 10, 200817 yr Looking wonderful Daz, you have such a good eye for detail and getting things just right for the space
April 10, 200817 yr Author It was always drummed into me measure twice cut once. I have a habit of remeasuring until I am sure it will work. Â I have learnt a few things from the first one which will help with the next few. Don't put the back on until all the rails. dividers and guides are done. It help with clamping from both front and back.
April 19, 200817 yr Author A bit of an update. Â Â Â Got the trays today so now all I need is the dividers and Breeding season to really start. I am waiting till after the nationals to start this year. It will be easier on everyone while I am in Perth. Â .................................................... Â Â With the birds being sick last week I decided to quickly make up a holding / Quarantine cage in the garage away from the aviary. Â Â Â I ordered the trays today for them. Hopefully I won't need them soon. Edited April 19, 200817 yr by Daz
April 27, 200817 yr Author :::UPDATE:::  Interesting comment by me. Hopefully I won't need them soon. wink.gif  Well a bit of a distraction this week but I did finish (nearly) the first of the 6 ban of cages.    one bank to go and new trays.
April 27, 200817 yr Hi Daz  They turned out really, really well. I bet you have noticed the light in the breeding room now with the melamine cabinets as the old ones would have absorbed the light instead of reflecting it.   Derek
April 27, 200817 yr They look great Daz. There is something nice, clean and crisp about white. Great job.
May 4, 200817 yr Author Up Date: Finished. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Well now to set up in preparation for the Breeding season. Edited May 4, 200817 yr by Daz

May 4, 200817 yr WOW you got that finished quick! It was only the shell last week when I saw it! You could definately do that as a living I reckon.
May 4, 200817 yr Author Thanks All. Â I want to change the wooden dividers to wire. I have some brought in at my work for a job so I might just snip a piece off
