Posted March 26, 200817 yr I have never seen this happen before, so I don't know if it is 'normal' or not, but I would assume not. One of my hens is sitting on 5 eggs at present, this is her first clutch and she is doing a good job. Last night, I was not home, but my Mum watched her come out for a break and she was sitting on a perch eating some leaves and she laid an egg. The egg dropped to the ground and was damaged, so it wasn't able to be saved. Does anybody have an idea why she would do this? Could it be she felt she already has enough eggs to look after, if so, can they not decide when to stop laying?

Dont worry....it was no conscious decision of hers....just bad timing Edited March 26, 200817 yr by KAZ
March 26, 200817 yr I have a hen that laid her first egg on the floor (damaged) but continued on and laid another 6 in the nest box of which 4 where fertile and are strong healthy "teenagers". As Kaz says, just bad timing.
