Nesting Boxes

Featured Replies

When I was previously breeding I never used to put anything in my nesting boxes but I notice a few photos around where it seems wood shavings have been used.

Is it necessary to put anything in and if so, what do you use.

Thanks

I use wood shavings. Hens usually toss it out when cleaning house ready for egglaying and you add them back in once the chicks start arriving.

It's one of those personnal things. I use clean wood shavings and as Kaz said the hen usually throws it out. I replenish mine after the chicks are hatch out and between rounds.

I also use wood shaving, but if i have trouble with the hen dirtying her nest(especially the eggs) before they hatch because she's removed all the shaving then i add in seed husks :D
