Mozzie Has Eggs

okay I know that Mozzie and Blue have been getting really close in the past few months. I get that they are in love but hello Mozzie has now taken to emptying the seed trays to try and lay in them. I had to really re think how I have everything set up. went and bought new small shallow ones and lots of sticks, also made a bunch of stick and cups so that i can feed them then untill she gets over this phase but now i am worried what if she never gets over it? Part of me wants to say screw it and put a breeding box in the cage and let them have at it. My father use to breed budgies so not worried about what is involved but then there is the whole issue of having a more babies and then having to sell them... Options, thoughts idea?

HEHEHE ..... So she is a food dish layer .... If you don't want them to breed then you've doen the right thing using shallow dishes just take the eggs out she will soon get over it I hope ... I am sure that Kaz has answered a question like this before Maybe search her posts ..... It's up to you if you want them to breed then do it .... NOTHING IS AS WONDERFUL THEN HEARING THOSE BABIES CHEAP ...... ( feathers told me this years ago and mate she is right ) ...

Good luck with it all

You can't determine if she will continue to lay and letting them have the babies doesn't get it out of their system and my get it more into their system. If you don't know what you will do with the babies I personally would addle them good (or what other breeders on here my have another solution) let her get sick of sitting on them and hope she stops. Robin had a egg laying hen that would not stop she did have to separate the hen and worked with the rescue that she volunteers with to find her a good home. The babies are fun (all babies are) but then they grow up and there is such and over population of budgies, dogs and cats you really have to take that all into consideration too. These are just my thoughts.

Hi there Vamp,

I'm with Elly. If you don't have a plan for any babies that might hatch, then it is best to not create them in the first place. Putting a breeding box inside the cage could create problems with the other two in there as well. They would be better off separated into a breeding cabinet or another cage.

You can buy fake eggs at bird shops. If she is going to keep trying maybe provide a spot where she can lay eggs and as they are laid remove them, addle them and throw them away and replace them with a fake egg. Let her sit on her clutch for a few weeks and then remove them.

Hope this helps.

Yeah I think untill I know what I am going to do with them then it would be a no no to even think about them. The fake eggs sound like a good idea however I am worried that if I give her an area then Flame might decided to try, however I am sure at 8 years of Age Harley is shooting blanks so nothing will come of them unless Blue is two timing Mozzie.... oh the naughty naughty birds!

To addle the eggs shake them so the inside scamble

(Laughing out loud) I am not sure I could do that. I think the best course of action is to stop her from laying them. Also I am pretty sure she is about a year old and flame is only about 5 months old so really don't want them thinking about this till they are at least 18 months. So it's operation no nest! I am however thinking out getting a proper outdoor avairy and taking in some more rescue birds which may later down the track help with the issue of what to do with them once they hatch!
