Pippin is going through a heavy moult at the moment, but I noticed yesterday that he has started to get blue feathers coming through near his bum. I have also noticed what looks like very faint blue stripes across his chest. He is coming up to three years old and I can't say I have ever noticed these feathers before. I'm not that well up on genetics but I think Pippin is what is called a normal green.

 

Is it possible for a change in some feather colours to happen or is it that they are more noticeable due to the moult :budgiedance:

It’s hard for us to tell without seeing a picture, maybe he is a Yellow faced Blue or may be masking that mutation or maybe it’s like you say just that they are new feathers, as the colour does fade some after time.

I agree if you have some younger pics and then now pics that would help determine what is going on .

Yes, he still has his white vent feathers, the blue feathers are on the outer area

isn't that interesting... I have a 'normal green' that has thrown chicks with some blue feathers like that, underneath around the vent area.

Those are normal..I do believe and have seen it on normal greens the blue feathers around the vent and within the tail area.

I'm surprised as these have only just appeared in the last week or so.

Now that's where you lose me, I'm sooooo ignorant with genetics and unfortunately, the breeder I got him from no longer breeds due to ill health so I can't check it out.

So in the Yellow Face 2 birds the yellow will start to molt throughout the body hence turning the blue into green (yellow & blue = green). If the YF2 gene washes throughout the whole body of the bird it can make it totally green very much like a normal green (which is actually a yellow based bird with the blue = green).

 

How much the YF2 spreads and how dark is based on the genetic make up of that particular gene.

I'm hoping he produces a few more, the colours are stunning around his tail, but the camera doesn't pick it up enough.

I know what you mean, Pretty actually had some very dark teal blue feathers and they were simply stunning, Merlin on the other hand has the black very dark blue feathers per his violet coloring, Pretty was a sky blue.
