What Is This Seed

What is this seed that comes in my Trill brand mix? - it's in both budgie and tiel mixes

It is not mentioned on the packet and i am hoping its not a "Filler" (to add weight to the mix) :glare:

It is always the only seed that is left over in the dishes?????

Thanks :)

What's the ingredient list? It almost resembled dried corn, but I don't think that would be in a budgie mix?

Ingredient list is:

White French Millet

Panorama Millet

Panicum

Wheat

Sorghum

Dehulled Oats

Japanese Millet

Shirohie Millet

Canary Seed

Red Millet

Canola Seed and

Linseed

phew theres a lot

:glare: Could be.

Might also be that they didn't realise our birds don't like eating it. Maybe some do though? I notice mine always leave the rapeseed and linseed, but it's on recommended seed lists. (And Squee hates oats, luckily for both of them Milly adores them).

My Trill mix doesn't have those anymore - it looks like a new formulation and my budgies eat all of it.

Maybe thats what it is - sort of like none of my family (except my hubby) will eat brussle sprouts hahahaha

Its definately sorgum, some people call it milo,

Its to hard for the budgies to crack thats why they dont eat it .

As for a filler , I say yes puts the weight up and they are picking it in the north west NSW at the moment so its plentyful and cheap.

I find there are heaps of these in the lower brands For instance the " Home Brand" Budgie mix is almost filled with 1/2 of these seeds

Tell Me about it even the Go - Lo seed is the same ...... This I learnt when I first started so Have been buying seeds from breeders for the past year and a bit now ..... Keep them see if they sprout or give to Larger keets

:budgiedance: Well that's plain dodgy then. I'm glad you brought it up Liv as I never thought of it this way.

I used to just give it to the chickens, they had no problems gobbling it up. I've sprouted them before too, the budgies will eat it like that.

I also feed Coco Trill and thought that I would take a look at mine.

I did find lots of Sorghum in the 2kg pack which I bought when I first got Coco and am still using.

But the other week I bought a smaller 1kg pack and sorghum wasn't listed on the ingredients list, along with wheat ^_^ .

Somebody told me on this forum that the smaller packs are a bit clearer, but I didn't realise that they added more fillers in the larger packs, especially being the same brand, and we are only talking a kilo difference between the sizes. I haven't started using the small pack yet, but it will be interesting to see if they still sneak in the Sorghum.

I don't think that I will be going back to the larger pack (well not while I only have one little birdy to feed)

It is annoying to think that it's a filler

Other than that, the Trill seed is really good - its got a vitamin supplement and shell grit in it as well

I buy the 10kg bags and they last 1-2 weeks - I get mine from my local Big-W store and it costs just under $19 per 10kg

The 1kg box sounds good but they would eat it in a day or so, so would make it very expensive.....

A little  ... the use of these fillers and being 'ripped off' reminds me of when you buy a packet of chips/crisps and after you open it and release the air... it's only half full!!!

Hey Liv just thought I would say that the shell grit is a waste as well and puts the weight up , your birds would never eat the quanity that is in the mix , buy the mix without grit and buy some grit separate , you will be better off in the long run.

arh yes mase , you always feel like your ripped off when you buy that big packet only to have it half full ;)

Yes, but the chips need the air to stop them from being crushed :nest:

Yes, i have one of those stores here... i stoped useing them as they put their prices up too much... but if i am getting more seed for my money, rather then weight, then i will use them from now i think

We used to have one of those places around the corner of me too. You'd go in and get a scoop of this, and a scoop of that etc.. and make up your own seed. We used to buy our rabbit mix like that too. Unfortunately it's long gone. :(

:( Guess I am lucky then  .....

Noticed though that the other breeders in my district but it too and resell it for a HUGE $$ Profit ....

Some people Eh
