2 Budgies Together

Featured Replies

Hello

I will adopt 2 budgies. One, a grey spangle male, hand feed, will join us at 7 weeks old at the beginning of April. The second one, a green pied male, manipulated since birth, will join us somewhere in the middle of April when he will be 8 weeks old. Both are still too young right now. They dont came from the same breeder. Both are allready very tamed with the breeder, accepting to being manipulated and learning the up command.

Of course, at start, they both will have their own cage.

BUT... will it be possible for them to bond with me if they hear each other in the house?

will it be possible for them to bond with me if they finally live together in the same cage after the quarantine?

would it be preferable to keep them separate as long as they are not totally tamed and bond to me? but I find it kind of cruel as I was adopting two because I didnt want them to be alone... I'm a stay at home mom so I have lots of time to interact with them...but I found that 2 birds who interact together are much more fun to watch than a lonely bird who's allways waiting for us to play...

But in the same time, after reading several posts in this forum, I believe I maybe made a mistake and should cancel one budgie and only adopt the second one in some months... It's sad as I'm allready in love with these babies!!

what's your opinion?

thanks!

Nancy

sorry for my English mistakes...it's a second langage for me, used mostly over the web, so I do my best!! biggrin.gif

First you will need to quarantine your birds from each other for 30 days since you are not purchasing them together (even if they are from the same person) they will need to be quarantined.

During that time you can work with both of them on taming. I would make sure they have both bonded with you and have your trust before you introduce them because once they met they will bond to each other (in most cases). Then you will need to continue to work with them together to create a bond with the new relationship also.

Does that make sense?

Agree with everything elly said... she didn't say wash your hands thoroughly before taming the other bird... I think she didn't say that because its so obvious... :D You'd hate for decease to be spread from one bird to the other, by you.

Hello and welcome to the forums. Your english is perfect... no issues here! Elly gave some good advice... I'll just add by suggesting you check out our FAQ's for a wealth of information... especially Taming Your Budgie, which was written by Elly. Good luck and we'd love to see some pitures when they arrive. Please feel free to keep us updated on their progress when you begin and remember we are all hear to help, so ask anything you want! :D

:D Nothing to add, you have been steered in the right direction! :D

Everything has been said so i just want to add

Hello and welcome :D

Welcome. You don't need to cancel one, they can both bond to you. At one time, I had 11 budgies and all were bonded to me, I was definitely a flock member. And a very good human perch too. :glare: You will be getting them young enough that they shouldn't really be too afraid of you once they settle in. They will like each other, but with regular interaction from you they will like having you around too.

Hi Nancy,

I agree with everything that has already been said. As to whether to keep them in one cage or two, that's entirely up to you. After quarantine they could be kept in just one cage together. But, if you decided to have two cages maybe they could spend out of cage time together when you let them out for a fly.

Like Rainbow I had up to 10 budgies inside at one stage and they would interact with each other and me and it was so lovely watching them play.
