How Do You Serve You Seed

Featured Replies

I guess this is mainly for those with avairies but any ideas are great! How do you serve you seed? I have some dishes with fresh seed daily, and some other feeders which go down as the seed is eaten. What do you do and what do you find wastes the least amount of seed. :)

I have tried them all........

Jar feeders in the breeding cages...great until they get clogged by weevil moths. I now use dishes.

Aviary, large platters...hanging ones and ones on pedestals. Had the large metal seed dispensers that hang on the wall with the seed catcher under...mice can climb the wire and get into them. Anything on the wire mice can get into. Best are the ones on a pedestal....wide platters 2 feet wide.

I use the white/green feeders in the avairies and seed dishes in the cages too.

What are the pedestal feederes Kaz, I haven't heard of them?

Me too... But I'm finding I waste a far bit of seed in the green/white feeders as I clear away the husks... Kaz'z feeders are the base of a pedestal fan... I think it's just a pair of legs on top and bottom (bottom for legs and top for a flat platform for food) I'm sure she'll correct me if I'm wrong! :budgiedance:

I make my own. I find discarded pedestal fans and use the base legs and vertical section....two of them ...one upended into the other and a large platter on top...large terracotta plant saucer

I use a cat litter Tray and inside this I put one of those double sided cat feed dishes , The idea is all birds can get in the litter tray and eat whether its seed being kicked out or straight from the bowl . I then remove the small feed dish and blow the husks from the litter tray rteplace any uneaten seed in the small dish and refill . This way not too much waste and husks arent everywhere on the floor .

The litter trays are sitting on a shelf fixed to a tin wall so mice if any cannot get in (fingers crossed).

Hey there,

I give my seed in the hanging green/white self feeders, which I find works fantastic!! My birds drop their husks mainly onto the floor and whenever I top up the feeders I do a manual scoop out all the way around too, to remove the really fine seed dust. I don't really have any wastage as every evening most of the population in my aviary is wandering around on the floor picking over the husks looking for leftover seed. Then once a week I sweep out the husks.

In my breeding cages I use the jar self feeders, which work great for me as I have never (touch wood) had a moth problem with any seed I have bought. Same deal with them, every couple of days I tip them sideways, which empties the bottom section removing any fine dust build up.

Feathers.

ps: oh, I too had a flat feeder that I made from the base of an old pedestal fan. I used to use it mainly for veggies etc, until my son burnt the plastic top of it :glare:

Your son burnt it!!! Naughty naughty...

Thanks all for your ideas thus far. It's great to hear what others are doing...

I have a tray built to the side of my aviary for holding fresh food dishes as well as two plastic tupperware trays that I dump seed into to avoid waste of seed. They like to "forage" the seed from the dishes most. I used to have hanging feeders but they generally ignored them so I took them out of the aviary. I also have two large jar feeders on the floor for the ones who prefer to eat down below. (note that my birds are in a basment without rodent or bug issues *knock on wood* and the birds enjoy them.) I also use the jar feeders in breeding cages as well as seed trays for the wire breeding cages.
