New Budgie Owner Questions

Featured Replies

It is okay to only have 1 budgie if you have the time to spend with it and bond they do very well. Merlin is an awesome single bird. If you find you are gone a lot during the day and evening then a 2nd budgie would be good but if you wnat to keep them tame you need to work with them especially if you want to be included in the flock.

Side note, who is breeding the budgies you told me about? You said they look like Merlin.

my friend karen has breed jack and jill a few times :D and so far there are 5 eggs.

now i have another question

do the males talk more than the females? my friend says jack talks more than jill

Yep!!! Generally females aren't known for there talking abilities... but some do. Males on the other hand can talk the leg of a Donkey. Most of them imitate other birds noises, general household noises and can sometimes be taught to say words and phrases. Although, this may not be the case with every male budgie... I guess some just don't talk

and another one

i am sure that there are lots of budgies books out there. What book do you all suggest i should get?

:ygbudgie: Liv, I beg to differ, some opposite sex budgies WILL procreate in the absence of nesting boxes and paraphernalia.

There are a couple of topics about books on here.. If you do a search of the threads something should come up. I think the title was Book Review.

thanks, i found it after i posted the question  there are a few used bookstores here in peterborough. i checked chapters online and they don't have the books listed, so i'll check the used bookstores :)

okay  what does preen and moulting mean?

It is great that you are asking alot of questions! .... I do suggest that if you are buying the 1 bird first then to get a male if you are wishing to Tame and Talk ..... Most females are Biters rather then talkers .... YOu have been given a vast range of advice and I too agree that NOT ALL BIRDS BREED WITHOUT A NEST BOX ... You may have read on here that a few members Hens have laid eggs in their feed dishes too ...... I look forawrd to seeing your New Addition Best of Luck Mate

and some more:

i've learnt that budgies love throwing their food, is there anything out there that can be used, so that the floor isn't messy? i've been told to get a cage skirt? what is that?

and when a hen is nesting, what does that mean?

Budgies are messy. Husks, seed and feathers tend to land on the floor no matter what you do, but a cage skirt is a bit of fabric/elastic that goes around the bottom section of the cage to help keep some of the seed in. I find it helps to have feeders towards the bottom of the cage too.

If a hen is nesting, She is creating a nest for herself and her eggs - Meaning she is in the mood to breed

and some more questtions :D

how far up should the perches be? and how long does it take for the chicks to grow feathers?

and what does it mean to candle eggs?

Edited by Keisha

how far up should the perches be? well for chicks you want it so they can jump up and hold onto just to get them used to perching, once they can perch, budgies always like the higest point... that said... you've got to leave enough room for them to stand up straight :D

and how long does it take for the chicks to grow feathers? Depends on what you call feathers...

and what does it mean to candle eggs? When you candle eggs you take a torsh and shine it on the eggs. You do this to see if they are fertile... Part of the egg will be darker than the rest...

Females can sometimes be great talkers. My nan's female budgie yells at her male budgie friend "Noddy's a bloody wimp!" They can't work out where she got it from but I suspect my grandpa :D

here's a few more

what are blood feathers? what causes them? and how do you treat them?

what are blood feathers? what causes them? and how do you treat them?

Blood feathers, also called "pin feathers," are new feathers that are starting to grow. Since they are actively growing, they need a large blood supply and will bleed if broken, hence the name. Each blood feather grows from a special area in the skin called a follicle. The feather has an artery and vein that extend up into it from the follicle and nourish the feather. Due to the color of the blood supply, the shaft of a blood feather will appear dark, whereas the shaft of an older feather will be white. A blood feather has a larger quill (calamus) than a mature feather. A blood feather starts out with a waxy keratin sheath that protects it while it grows. When the feather is mature, the blood supply will recede and the waxy sheath will be removed by the bird.

On occasion, a blood feather will break and start to bleed, or it may accidentally be cut when the wings are trimmed. In a healthy bird, a broken blood feather is usually not a life-threatening emergency if appropriate steps are taken. Even if the bleeding stops quickly, however, you may wish to have your bird examined by a veterinarian, and have the broken blood feather removed( if you have never pulled a blood feather before, it is best to let an avian vet show you how). Even if the blood has clotted, broken blood feathers are often removed so they cannot be reinjured and consequently bleed. If a broken blood feather is removed, a new one will start to grow.

hi all :) can you put the cage by the window? i don't want to keep azul in the kitchen and am wondering if its okay to put his cage on a table by the window?

 You can put a cage by a window unless direct sunlight is involved. I picked up a rescue budgie once that had it's poor partner fried as there was little shelter when the hot weather occured. If you do, put blinds down or draw curtains until the sun has passed. Also, don't forget to consider the draft factor should the window be opened. Also the kitchen is not the best place for a bird as they are exposed to dangers and fumes if Teflon pans are used. :)

birds should never be kept in the kitchen for a permanant location, my brother in laws birds both died there just recently, I actually put a post about it in What not to do with a budgie.

I only put Merlin by the screen door when it is 80 F or above because I don't want him to get drafted. In direct sunlight is excellent for them as they all need the vitamins the sun can provide but direct is not good for the reason's Phoebe stated.

okay now this summer may be hot, so can i put on my ceiling fan? or will it be too cold for azul? but then is heat bad for them? any suggestions will be great

B) Relax Keisha, you will find the right place. In cold weather that might be too close to the door so your budgie might catch a draft, nice if he can look out the window if there is no direct sunlight on him. Not being in your house, it's hard to get the total layout. :o

It depends on what type the white budgie is.... it could be albino, double factor Spangle etc
