Posted March 19, 200817 yr Just a thought but does budgie seed go off in the heat? It's keep in the kitchen in a airtight container.. He has filtered water too! He has the runs and he hasn't had any new foods... Edited March 19, 200817 yr by mag
March 19, 200817 yr Budgie seed should be stored in a cool dry place not where it is warm and/or humid or damp because it can promote the seeds to go bad. If your budgie has the runs it could very well be sick and have nothing to do with the seed. When did the symptoms start? Are the dropping watery? Do you have an avian vet in your area that you can make an appointment with if your bird continues to show signs of being sick?
March 19, 200817 yr A change in poop is worrying. There are many other things besides food that can cause runny poos, some of which are very harmful. In addition to Elly's questions - What colour are his poos? Has anything changed in his environment? I have a related question to ask the board - is having it airtight a worry? I have read somewhere, I can't remember, that anaerobic conditions will promote the seeds to ferment. Is that right? Edited March 19, 200817 yr by Chrysocome

March 20, 200817 yr I keep my seed in a plastic bin with a lid on it... its not airtight, but keeps the seed dry and clean. I personally use Trill brand seed. If you are worried about your seed here is a link that can help test it for cleanliness and quality Here
March 20, 200817 yr I read your other post and they are both different questions so having them separate is fine. If the seed is old, moldy or spoiled it can be making your budgie sick. Edited March 20, 200817 yr by KAZ fixed double post
March 20, 200817 yr I also keep my seed in a large plastic bin with a lid. Not airtight but keeps the seed clean and weevil free. The seed would get hot as it is located in the aviary, but there has been no adverse effects to the seed. To test your seed....run your hands through it for a few moments....if you hands and arms come out looking disty and dark...then the seed has mould and should be discarded.
