March 17, 200817 yr Author Still no change. I will taking throwback's advice and try the raspberry cordial. I will keep you updated on his progress. Any change?
March 17, 200817 yr Carlingford animal hospital . Vet is Rob Marshall , they specialise in birds , you can send them dropping samples in the mail and it cost about $8o for a diagnoses. If hes in good spirits then try throwbacks advice. Me personally I would use citric acid crystals 1 gram to the litre , this conditions the bowel and tightens up the droppings. Goodluck with him.
March 17, 200817 yr Hmm. I can see there is a lot more urine and it seems discoloured. I would have suspected eucalyptus (green, lots of water), but you did say that you stopped for a week and nothing changed. The photo you posted looks like polyuria (not true diarrhoea). Here is what my text book says: (Avian Medicine: Principles and Application, by Ritchie, Harrison and Harrison (1994 Wingers Publishing, Florida; p149-50) Bright-green, loose feces and yellow, green or brown urates may indicate hemolysis or hepatitis and are common with malnutritional, toxic, chlamydial, bacterial or viral hepatitis. Urine may be excreted without urates when birds are nervous, polydipsic or consuming fruits and vegetables with a high-water content. Pathologic causes of polyuria include diabetes, renal disease, wasting disease, certain medications and exposure to various toxins. Finding bubbles (gas) in the feces is common in birds with true diarrhea. Diarrhea can occur with various parasitic, fungal, chlamydial, viral and bacterial infections, systemic diseases and following the administration of some medications. Unfortunately that is a very large range of possibilities, and I wish I could do a physical exam or some tests for you. I must really recommend you see a different vet if you don't have any confidence in this one. Have you tried this link? http://www.vetafarm.com.au/avian_vets.asp?state=nsw And here is a good site about polyuria: http://www.petplace.com/birds/polyuria-in-birds/page2.aspx One more question - how long has George had loose stools? March 17, 200817 yr Author Thank you for your information. The vet I have been going to is one of the vets in the link you have provided. George's droppings have been looking this way for the past 2 months. Edited March 18, 200817 yr by KAZ
March 17, 200817 yr Do you weigh George I would at least 2x a week to watch his weight if he has loss or gain especially with watery stools like that you don't want him to be dropping weight then it may be too late. I agree if you haven't gotten an answer yet from the vet you have been going to I would switch to another qualified avian vet.
March 17, 200817 yr Author Thank for the advice Elly, I will start to weigh him and find another qualified vet. March 17, 200817 yr I know every time I mention the Raspberry people must smirk and roll there eyes. But then they end up with a dead budgie and a big vet bill. Vickykh it has to have at least 10% raspberry, cottees is no good last time I looked it had more apple that anything else. Read the label it's the raspberry that kills the bacteria in the gut.I have said on here before, it is very hard to find a good avian vet. Kaz is properly right about being missdiagnosed. makes it very hard, all you can do is try something else. Stop the greens and boil there water. Just remember it is only advise. If he does start to fluff up and look larthargic you will have to get tests done to find the cause. They can go down hill quick! "> This is what I am using. It has 25% raspberry. Make a mild solution and keep him on a basic diet of seed and some good grit, you can get grit with charcoal which can help as well. But as I said if he starts to look fluffed up than maybe send a sample as lonebudgie suggested.( Just don't tell the post office your sending poop through the post as I think that may be a NO! NO!) It may well just been the eucalyptus that has upset him, as chrysocome has said, the wild budgie is a lot more hardened to them than the domestic breed, not many animals can stomach them. March 18, 200817 yr Author Thank you everyone for your advice and help. I didn't have any luck yesterday finding the right cordial. Thank you Throwback for going through the trouble of posting the picture of the cordial that you use. I will try again today. Will keep you updated on his progress. March 23, 200817 yr I know every time I mention the Raspberry people must smirk and roll there eyes. Throwback, no eye rolling here, it is a treatment I use too. I am unsure of if it is still happens, but Australia used to ship HUGE quantities of red cordial to third world countries to help with their diarrhea and gut problems. 2 months and $800.00 dollars later you'd try anything, really, wouldn't you? By the way, VERY expensive vet, Vicky, even as far as avian vets go! Feathers. Edited March 23, 200817 yr by Feathers
March 23, 200817 yr Author Thank you for asking. I followed your advice with the raspberry cordial. Thank you. :glare: George's droppings are still green but not as watery as before. I hope this is a sign of improvement. From what I can tell he hasn't lost any weight and is still very active and happy. I am still a little concerned though but will keep you updated if I notice any changes. Any update on George? It has nearly been a week.
