Posted March 14, 200817 yr hi, just wondering if you have any tips to relax Bing when he out of his cage, he basically just sits there and doesnt do anything like he is scared stiff when i bring him out everyday. and i put him on my chest when i am lying down and he will come up and bite my lip, hard! is this because he doesnt like me and wants me to move? or is he just inquisitive? other than that Bing is doing well thanks
March 14, 200817 yr sounds like he may be curious, do you have a play station where he can perch and play with toys when he is outside of his cage? Along with some of his favorite treats? If you give them positive things outside of the cage to do along with playing with them you will find that they will start to relax. If you just take them in and out for interaction they tend to stay more nervous I experienced that with my own birds.
March 14, 200817 yr Author well i put him on my desk and give him a ball which he is **** scared of, so i shoved a few bits of millet in it and he starts pecking at the millet, but still hates the ball and doesnt touch it on his own, shoulsd i giv him some small figurines or something? what are some good items for him/her to play with? thanks
March 14, 200817 yr I would give him an area of his own that he can always play at if that is your computer area that is fine. They are scared of everything at first but the plastic balls with the bells tend to be their favorite put a couple in his cage too to get used to them. I am not sure how long your time out is daily but it should be at least 1 hour I find the longer they are out at one time the more comfortable they are vs in and out in and out in 10-15 minutes intervals. When do you find him most scared? What actions are you doing or what is going on when he seems the most nervous? Also how long have you had him? I have to run but will be back later just leave your answers and I will recheck the post plus there are others too.
March 14, 200817 yr I have been experimenting a bit with out of cage time for Charlie and Benny. My kids toy room is usually scattered with blocks & leggo. Mine seem to love just hopping onto things and climbing things. I made a little stairway out of leggo and Charlie was pretty quick to climb to the top. "I'm the king of the castle" type thing. Also I find if I take them out separately, they seem to call out for each other, and not really interested in anything. If I have them both out together, they seem to play a lot more.
March 14, 200817 yr You can Buy ...Make a "Playground" ... ... Then add fav fruit and veg or millet there too .... Edited March 14, 200817 yr by Neat
March 14, 200817 yr If you are also at your computer & you have Bing hanging around you & your desk ... let him have a higher perch then your desk level. Don't have him on or in your hands. His being lower & at hand level can frighten him a little. Let him sit up a higher .. perhaps on a wicker basket handle ... or rig up some sort of safely strong perch set up on shelves, with weights to assure steadiness & they won't move. Place Bing up on this advantage post & show him he is the king of the castle ! Then ... put some millet or his treats he likes maybe a few seeds or a few little plastic toys in the basket & let him perch up on the handle & brouse around & see what is happening in his & your world. He will decide when & if he will come down on his own terms & maybe chew his millet or play with his toys should he want to ... roll your pen lightly around on the desk & don't make sudden loud noises to startle him. Talk to him softly & show you are interested in him ... get him to try & vocalize back to you ... face to face or eyeball to eyeball is a good key. It makes a connection. They do strongly become attracted to your face & voice. Let him get use to this new world you show him. He will investigate it his way. I had a budgie that did just that & before too long he was down on the desk off his high perch & playing & attacking my keyboard & trying to type & do my work for him. Was a great deal too ... he worked cheap ... for millet. Good luck ... keep us posted.
March 15, 200817 yr Author thanks everyone for your replies, i might try and rig up some sort of perch for my room next to the desk in my room, Elly, thank you for your wonderful advice as always, i dont really know what makes him scared, i think it is the fact that it is very quiet in my room, but i put the radio on to try and calm him down. but i can tell when he is going to fly away because he moves his head rapidly looking at everything. i have had him kind of chirp and warble to me a while ago, but now all he does is let out a quick cheep and stop. i dont really do anything to scare him, one minute hes fine and then he will fly and land on the blinds near the corner of my room. I have had him for 5-6 weeks now, and he has come a long way since. also, should i go and collect him every time he flies away, or should i let him come to me, because he calls like he wants me to come and get him, and when i dont he flies around the room just above my head and then lands on the curtains again trying to get my attention. Should i ignore him or go and get him? Also i have put a ball in his cage and he hasnt tocuhed it, its been about 2 weeks. Burdies, your lucky to have budgies settle in so quickly, good luck in the future. Neat, thanks for that i might buy a playground NickNack, thanks for all your suggestions, he will eat millet on the desk and seems fine, i have put bits of millet in the sides of the ball and he will eat the millet, but when i push the millet into the ball, he loses interest and just stops and stares. He has eaten carrot, but like millet better. and the sneaky bugger whenever i take the millet away form him and give him carrot, he will eat the millet that has dropped onto the desk, (Laughing out loud) Edited March 15, 200817 yr by Andrew
March 15, 200817 yr 5-6 weeks is not long in terms of of a budgie, yes when he flies away let him come to you, start off in a small room so he can't go on curtain tops but if you keep everything he wants by you he will be entinced to come to you including his cage and favorite food or just his seed bowl. By keeping those things by you then he will start to learn that if he wants is stuff he has to trust you. Also you may consider clipping for just a one time deal if you have issues about it. Everyone has different thoughts but I can tell you that clipping is a quick way to work on taming and when their wings grow back they will not go wild but it gives you the opportunity to not do the chase game (which frightens them). Food for thought, both my guys where clipped and Pretty's wings grew back and I never clipped him again he stayed completely tamed. I had Merlin 1 more time after Pretty died to work with him and he has been flighted since (just about a year) and he is as tame as ever.
March 15, 200817 yr Author i'm not to sure about wing clipping, also i tried letting him come to me after waiting about hlf an hour and he still didnt come, so if that happens should i give in, also he is very scared of the computer screen and tv's etc, whenver the colour changes on the screen he/she flinches.
March 15, 200817 yr Andrew....a little project for you. Go looking for a really good branch with a main section and some spreading branches off that. The cement it or plaster it into a large tin, so its kind of like a christmas tree with no leaves.....then if you put that in your room he has somewhere to land. It seems he has nowhere to land and that can be scary when flying around a room and all there is is blinds or curtain tops.
March 15, 200817 yr When all you have it curtain tops you are not going to create an enviroment of learning, remember wings always grow back and it doesn't hurt them in anyway. It only takes about 2 months for them to regain flight just enough time to start building a bond. Going after him and chasing him is going to continue to strain the bond you are working on. Other then that you must be in a small room with no curtain tops to do your training sessions and be very patient . As for the lights, computer screen etc...he will get over it as he gets more accustom to his surroundings. Edited March 15, 200817 yr by Elly
March 15, 200817 yr A good way to assure your branch is clean & not have pesticides is to wash it very well with water & a strong wash of vinegar. Rinse it off & then place it in the oven on 200 or 150 degrees .... a low setting for 20 minutes. Let it cool. This assures all bugs & bacteria will be cleared & killed from the branch. The branch does not bake. But the outer bark is a little nicer & dryer for them to chew on ... I have apple tree branches prepared for this. I stuck the branches in a large 2 litre soda bottle with heavy sand. The birds love to sit by the computer desk & chew & play on the branches. I have a paper under the bottle tree to catch the poopers & debris from things I hang on the branches ... like millet or apple slices or strips of sugar cane. These can all be placed on the branches with a simple clip. It lets the birds be chewy monsters they love to be & they are close to you to play & interact. Simple play center that's easy to make. DO NOT USE PEAR TREE BRANCHES ... check with the Forum of branches you can & cannot use for this ... some branches are not safe for your bird.
March 15, 200817 yr I know what you mean Kaz ... I used a large branch with lots of little limbs for climbing & rotated the branch for over an hour to bake & make my tree safe ! (Laughing out loud) I was going to go to my buddies Pizza restaurant & ask to borrow his oven ... but it would have turned my branch into ash in no time !
