Posted March 13, 200817 yr HI All, Obviously I am a new member! I actually own a cockatiel & an Indian ringneck. Yesterday I caught a budgie that landed on my car while I was standing out the front! Luckily for the little bird I have spare cages, as I just upgraded my cockatiels cage.
March 13, 200817 yr Does the budgie have an ID ring on it's leg ? If so you may want to get in touch with the state Budgie club to try and track the owner.
March 13, 200817 yr Hello and welcome :yellowhead: You are in the right place for expert advice. There are very talented budgie owners, breeders and even a few vets who are on here each day Well done for rescuing the little budgie. I hope s/he is okay. Budgies quite often have something wrong with them when they are rescued from the wild (mites etc). Do you have any pictures?? We will be able to tell you gender, approximate age and condition of your little bird. Well done again for your rescue
March 13, 200817 yr Author There is no band on the bird so not able to identify it that way.I have owned budgies before, even bred a few, so I am pretty sure it is only young (still has a few stripes on its head) and possibly female? Will take a picture & post for you shortly.ThanksHere's the pics, sorry about the quality, I took them on my phone. I did reduce the sizing & rotate them on photobucket, but they seem to be sideways & huge! :yellowhead:
March 13, 200817 yr She is a nice Mature Opaline Female. She looks in good condition - can you feel her breast bone. is there any "meat" either side?
March 13, 200817 yr Author I can feel her breastbone & I don't think there is much "meat" either side. She wasn't that happy about me touching her like that. She is quite small, not as large as some budgies I used to have. Hence the reason I thought she may have been younger.
March 13, 200817 yr I agree with Liv on the opaline female...she is also violet. Thin is something to worry about, but check her for a pooey bottom. If it is, please give her some warmth for a couple of days....cage with a lamp by it ( 25 to 40 watts ). Good job catching her up before she was a hawks dinner :yellowhead:
March 13, 200817 yr Author Have checked her bum and her droppings & all seems fine. They aren't runny or anything & she is chirpy. She has certainly given her feed a good working out (seeds only). Hasn't touched any veges, but I will keep offering them to her & see how she goes. Thanks so much for your advice & help with her! It's much appreciated.
March 13, 200817 yr She sounds like she is doing well considering her ordeal . sounds like you are doing everything right and she should put weight on well - i agree with Kaz. keep her warm and quiet for a couple of days. she has got to be stressed and tired as well as hungry.
March 13, 200817 yr Hi and welcome to all of your birds. She must have been very hungry, and possibly loose for a few days?!? Keep a close eye on her and keep her away from your other birds for atleast 30. Just in case she has anything...mites etc. Good luck with her.
March 13, 200817 yr Author I have kept her away from the other 2, and I have made sure I washed my hands after handling her, so I don't spread anything to my other feathered friends. Will keep her as warm and comfy as I can. cheers!
March 13, 200817 yr You can post some piks of your other birds and other pets in our OFF TOPIC section if you would like and we also have a competition running right now for photos of other feathered friends ( not budgies )

Will keep her as warm and comfy as I can. cheers! Good stuff. Don't be too worried if she wont eat her veggies. For all you know, she may not have been fed them where she used to live. Just keep offering them and hopefully she may give them a try.

March 13, 200817 yr She's a pretty bird that's for sure. Sounds like she's had an adventure she doesn't want to try again. Excellent rescue & good luck with her. Good thing she landed in your yard on your car ! Some birds have all the luck !

March 16, 200817 yr Author I know there is an Avian vet at Chermside but that is well over half an hour from here. The vet up the road, does do birds, so I will be ringing them later today. The budgie is doing very well and seems to be coping with her ordeal.
March 17, 200817 yr Hey Lovemybirds ... how is she handling the surroundings ? Is she eating well ? Chirping ? Hopping around her cage & being investigative ? Or is she just sitting quiet & being laid back ? What's her behaviour like ? Does she hear your other birds ? Does that interest her at all ?
