March 12, 200817 yr Author Hi thereYeah,we get hot days here as well (Perth WA).You could put a water mister in your aviary as i do,being careful not to wet the seed and perching areas, also a fan outside moving the water would be a good idea. Thats a good idea too... thanks. As for the babies dont breed this time of year it's too stressful for the babies and the parents and for us owners as well, take the boxes out and they wont lay any eggs. I didn't breed in december and January because it was too hot. We had a lovely February, with perfect weather, so i let them have one more round before the long winter break. No one could predict this nasty (record breaking) March heat wave. I got many male budgies last year..... hope i get some females from this hot weather I am lucky enough to be at home like Kaz. The aviary is just out side my back door and i can watch what is happening with my birds as much as i watch my children. Also, my A/C is refrigerated so i cant blow the air out my back door onto my aviary like i could with an evaprotive system Edited March 12, 200817 yr by **Liv**
March 12, 200817 yr Author 9:30am and It's currently 35*C. Here are the mesh lids..... What do you think??? The hens are taking to it okay... I have a cheeky cockatiel who is sititng on the mesh peeking in at the babies hehehe - i tried to get a picture but he knows he's being naughty and flys away when i come out hehehe Edited March 12, 200817 yr by **Liv**
March 12, 200817 yr Looks good, but you will have to watch out for those that try to look in because of it. Also be sure the mums can cope and still feed the babies as they may feel vulnerable in the aviary like that. Its different in the breeder cages as they dont feel threatened.

I know what you mean... the hens seem okay at the moment.... I could cut some shade cloth and pop it over the mesh to give some privacy but still allow ventilation???? March 13, 200817 yr Author Just an update... The hens started to protest against the mesh and wouldn't feed their crying babies :yellowhead: As soon as i removed the mesh the hens went running back to their babies Hmmmm time for plan B.... mist and a fan will have to do because I haven't found a water cooler yet
March 13, 200817 yr I was going to say good job on the nest boxes... but too late. Pity the hens weren't to keen, now they'll just have to put up with the heat! Did you say 35*C at 9.30 am?!? Poor you.
March 19, 200817 yr Author Well the heat wave broke yesterday and we are now having normal weather again (Still no rain though) Anyway i just wanted to thank you all for your help and support. All my budgies made it though the sweltering heat without any problems I am so releaved that it's all over and all my birds are well The only one who couldn't handle the heat was my canary, he had to spend the entire time inside under the airconditioning
March 19, 200817 yr Awsome news Liv. I'm glad they all made it through... even the canary who needed some Air Con help. I'm also glad the heat wave is over for you all and we get some normal Autumn weather.
