Posted March 12, 200817 yr It is REALLY HOT here! We have had days of between 38*C and 42*C for over 2 weeks now and there is atleast another week of this weather to go... :  My poor birds are sweltering in the heat. They are shaded and not in any direct sun. I mist them with the hose (shhh - water restrictions) but within 10 mins it's dry and they are all hot again. The newly hatched chicks are the ones i worry about the most. When i open the boxs i can feel the heat rush out and they are all panting vigerously What can i do to provide some relief??? March 12, 200817 yr I was hearing about that on the news. You poor thing. I remember Kaz or someone saying something about replacing the door of the nest box with clear plastic??? with holes in it for air... I'm sure she'll be on later if that's who said it. I hope they all make it and this heat is over very soon.
March 12, 200817 yr We have had a hot day or two here as well. I use mesh ( not plastic )....aviary mesh cut to replace the sliders in the nestboxes on the hot days. But I also run two water air coolers in my breeding room with any rise in temperature. Its worth the extra on the power bill just to keep them alive and happy. Today they have the aircoolers going as well.

Would it still work for my out door aviarys.I have just taken a photo for you of a nestbox with mesh but I will have to process later and put on as I have to do some work in the birdroom and go to the hardware store if I can. The mesh replaces the up and down slider...just for the day time and the wooden slider goes back on for the night time. I have some nestboxes with the top that opens and I put mesh on top of those as well. You just need some spare aviary mesh to cut to size for each type of nestbox. Keep it handy for the hot days...put it on and replace at night. Re the water cooler...its the old fashioned bonaire coolers that you put water in the back of....ask everyone you know. Almost everyone has one in the shed doing nothing since they put airconditioning in their house. Or 2nd hand shops, and even the recycle section at the rubbish tip. I get mine for free by keeping my eye open on the bulk refuse throwout days and people put them out on the verge for collection..........and yes.....friends of mine with aviaries just put them at the front and all the birds flock around them. Make sure you have perches all near the aircooler. Edited March 12, 200817 yr by maesie spelling bee :-)
March 12, 200817 yr Author Thanks for the great advice Kaz. a picture would be great I have lots of spare mesh so i will cut some "Lids" tonight ready for tomorrow. my nest boxes are the type with hinges at the back and lift and the front. I will hunt around for an air cooler
March 12, 200817 yr Normally I put mesh in and take out the slider, but in this nest it was too close to the ceiling and I couldnt without taking the breeding cabinet down....so I did a venting system on this one It is the lacewings nestbox.
March 12, 200817 yr Author Thanks for the Great picture. I love your cute bubs too My boxes are very different to yours....but you have given me an idea on what to do for mine though... i will make it up and post pics tomorrow

March 12, 200817 yr and here we are cold on the opposite ends, I hope it cools off soon and you have been given good advice on suggestions.

I heard that it is a record for you guys. The budgies manage better than we would imagine. You can cool down the aviary birds with a spray bottle or a light misting with the hose. Budgiebum the birds are screaming out to go into the boxes at the moment, especially after we had a bit of rain the other day.. and the weather over the next couple of days will make them even more keen to get into the breeding boxes. If you waited for April/May a lot of the hens would be too far past breeding condition and you would have to wait until August/September to start. Feathers.
March 12, 200817 yr Very inovative way to cool down the chicks kaz... must remember that... Jimmy, it is a nice way to cool down the visitors too (Not the mesh, the water cooler !! ) Feathers.
March 12, 200817 yr if you do that they'll never leave... you obviously haven't met my extended family :(

If you waited for April/May a lot of the hens would be too far past breeding condition and you would have to wait until August/September to start.Feathers. I breed right through our summer. The birds are in peak condition and I have my birdroom set up so its cool enough for them. Seems I breed 95% hen chicks through this period and thats a good thing. I work from home so I can check many times during the day and it works for me. Everyone has differing aviary and breeding room conditions, different aspects in the backyard.....north or south facing etc, differing materials the aviary is made from, shade or not, and so on. Some people can breed successfully though summer and others cant. I wouldnt be doing it if I worked away from my home during the day.
