Posted March 11, 200817 yr Hi, Noticed a darkish area around Blinky's eye (only this eye) is this a problem? She appears to be molting at the moment too maybe that's something to do with it? Many thanks Sue
March 11, 200817 yr If she is moulting they often rub their head on perches because its itchy and she may have rubbed her eye. I suggest you get a teabag in a cup of warm water and bather her eye with the teabag. It works. A couple of times a day should do. There are no feather mites happening are there ? March 11, 200817 yr Author Here's a better picture - i hope!Hi Kaz,mmmm, may be a bit tricky to bathe the eye - she's not really finger tame at all (there-in lies another length issue ) - matter-of-fact she goes CRAZY when I have my hand in her cage just to clean it. I think holding her and batheing her eye may cause her major stress. If that's the case should I take her to a vet.Not sure about the feather mites - (you probably have guessed I'm very new to the budgie owning club!) what should I look out for?Sue If she is moulting they often rub their head on perches because its itchy and she may have rubbed her eye. March 11, 200817 yr 100% of my budgies arent finger tame but I still manage to handle them and treat them. Put on gloves if you feel you need them. Stretch out her wings and on the white areas look for parasites....dark moving tiny objects. On the white flights you will see them if she has them. Spot on ivermectin on the back of her neck or mite spray will sort them out....if she has them. Vet if you feel you need to. Most birds who are hurting and need treatment seem to know you are helping them. While moulting, birds will benefit from moulti8ng aid available at bird stores. It helps with new feather growth and has a pile of good vitamins in it Cheers Kaz

March 11, 200817 yr Hi Sue, It is most likely from the moult.. you can see she is starting to get a brown patch above her cere too. Checking for mites isn't a bad idea. When you catch her keep your thumb and last two fingers arounf the birds wings and keep the head still between your first and second fingers (that prevents them biting, MOST of the time). Perhaps while you hold the bird someone else can apply the teabag and check for mites. Feathers.
