May 16, 200816 yr Author You have some spangles to be proud of there. They are "getting there" Pie :nest: BUT I have been told I need to breed some "directional feather" into that bloodline....you know the feathers that go sideways out over the eyes like buffalo horns

Its all about percentages Neat....when you have a great many birds you will lose a small percentage from one thing or another. It goes with the teritory. The spangles are cute...Mum and Dad are trying for more babies
May 16, 200816 yr They’re all looking great Kaz, I especially like some of those Spangles & that one Grey Spangle has good wing markings. I was just thinking how good their heads were Kaz & now your saying you need “more” directional feather. I lost my one & only Fallow hen the other day, found her dead on the floor of the cabinets, was on her second batch so got some chicks from her at least. Bought her earlier in the year. She had four chicks in the nest, the oldest about a week old, the largest had been fed by the cock, but the smaller were pretty cold & have fostered them out & all going well. One had just hatched, but the heat of the others must have kept them going, as nights are pretty cold here now.

I thought they were looking pretty good too Norm but I was told they havent as yet got directional feather. We will see how they look after 6 months or so as they are only babies and so far better than most I have bred. Sorry to hear about your hen Norm. I lost one just like that yesterday too. No sign of illness...she just left six eggs and keeled over. Full bodyweight, no sign of illness. Its good that when we breed a few at a time we have fosters for eggs and babies.
May 17, 200816 yr Yes Kaz, give them a couple of months, mostly they surprise you after they moult & can be different birds. I know the show breeders want lots of feather, but I wonder when I see those birds that you can't see their eyes for feather, whether they can see where they are going. Maybe that's why some spend so much time on the ground. I mated my Grey Green hen that I told you about the other day, with one of the birds I bought at the Hunter Valley show last year, it's a Cobalt, they produce 6 or 7 chick each batch & seem to be very early maturers, they have moulted out I think real nice, will have to get around to some pictures. Yes I didn't see any sign that my hen was crook, just dead & like you say fat…I had couple die this year that had lost weight, but others were still plump, hard to know sometime what it is. Could be like you often say something to do with mice. Have a great time at the Nationals, hopfully you will see some nice birds & meet some nice people too. Is Aly going too? May 20, 200816 yr Author More pictures taken today Everytime I put my hand in the breeder cage to do the food dishes this little hen jumped on my finger, then used it a s stepping board to jump out of the cage door and onto my top and run up under my chin.
