Scaley Face

I have a hen who's cere looks a bit crusty. I am not quite certain if its food or scaley face, but Ive had the odd bird with scaley and thought I might just treat her to be on the safe side. She has newly hatched babies and I was wondering if the medication could hurt them. The vet gave me this medication recently and it is actually ear drops. You paint it on the affected area. It worked very well for another hen I treated a few days ago. Thoughts please?

mmm That's a hard one... I'd prob say not to do it, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure the other more experienced members will have more of an idea.

One drop of ivermic on the back of the neck will clear it up and not hurt the young ones, . Ask your vet if you cannot get any.

I've heard that olive oil works i don't see that harm any young how ever better check with the Pros ...

Yes any oil works it clogs up the scales and kills the mite , but you have to be persistent and put it on at least twice a day.

Ive also been told Detol works you apply it with a cotton bud , but I have never tried it.

I wouldnt use the ivermectin while she is in a nest with young babies as it is a bit FUMEY. I had a hen with scaly who had babies once and the chicks never got it. Maybe try the oil till she is done raaising the chicks :)

I just had a whiff of this stuff the vet supplied me which is like a thick solution to be painted on and it doesnt smell too bad........

I heard a story just recently about using detol. A friend of mine told me the other day, when she was just learning about budgies and breeding etc, she was advised to use detol and she used it on 2 of her birds, who then died from the fumes, as one thing wasnt pointed out to her..........it has to be diluted. Now that might seem obvious to some, but to someone who has no idea, it might not be so obvious. She was devestated that her mistake caused the death of two of her birds, as you can imagine, so I thought I might just throw that in while the suggestion of detol was about :)

Haha......thats okay, it was just a coincidence that I just heard this story from a person last week, who is NOW quite experienced, but she was sharing some of her mishaps with me along the way, to hopefully prevent me from making some of her mistakes :)

I use Castor oil.

treat morning and night. use a cotton tip, lightly dab oil on the affected area. careful not to get the oil in the nostrils etc. I'd do it for about 3 days then repeat again in 2 weeks. :) good luck
