I have a female green and yellow budgie. She isn´t that old... Maybe a month and a half or so. She recently came into breeding condition, and there are two nesting boxes in the aviary. There is at least ONE other female in there, and there are eight budgies in total. There are also two quails and one cockatiel. There are at least three breeding age male budgies in there.

I noticed a couple of days ago, all of the males started trying to court her (Which, of course, is normal) but one particularly rough albino white budgie male tried to mate with her rather forcibly (I think). She seemed fine just before that, but straight after it happened, she flew to the floor and she is now really puffed up, lethargic and doesn´t notice much of her surroundings. They seem to be the symptoms of egg binding, but I´m rather inexperienced with aviary budgies. Also, I noticed she was regurgitating a clear liquid. I´m really worried, and I was wondering if anyone could help, please! Thankyou.

that doesn't sound good at all... just a query though... You said she is 1 and a half months old and in breeding condition... Do you mean you've had her for a month and a half or thats how old she is? I personally would take out the breeding box for about the next 11 months just so she doesn't get any idea's about having babies... but that won't help you out with your current problem of which I am not experienced enough to help with. but the good news is there are plenty of people here that are...

Well, I´m not too SURE how old she is, but I threw that in there, because it´s how long I´ve had her. Sorry about that.

Firstly welcome to you and your birds. You've definately come to the right place! If your budgie is only 1 1/2 months old she SHOULDN'T be breeding! They have to over 12mths old. I would remove all breeding boxes. I would also take her to an avain vet. She doesn't sound too well at all. Until you can get her to a vet, put her in a small cage inside, a dark, quiet room. Good luck, keep us updated and I hope she makes it through the night... it does sound worring though!

Thankyou for the information. Very unfortunately, though, we don´t have an avian vet anywhere nearby (We live in the country).

If she is egg bound , which I guess is the case with all the male activity. Then you need to give her some calcium, This is in the liquid form , pet shops have it or rural supplies, give her one or two drops to the beak, If you do not have any then a warm box for the night , put a lamp on her and this will give her enough warmth , You can try a drop of olive oil to the beak and rub some around her vent this may help her pass the egg , but you must keep her warm .

You dont necessarily need an avairan vet , your local vet can help you with the calcium.

Goodluck and I hope she pulls through.

Oh Mate, Hope she gets better... I have the same question though is she 1 1/2 Months old or have you had her for 1 1/2 months her cere wouldn't be brown and crusty ( breeding condition) if she was 1 1/2 months old.... Is there a vet near by??? Vomiting clear liquid doesn't seem to be a good sign , But the others are true in what they say put her in a hospital cage and Keep her warm ....

Also if she was just entered into the aviary when all the Boys where having their fun she wouldn't be egg bound straight away .. ( to my knowledge anyways ...Please feel free to correct me guys on this one ) .....

But I really hope she pulls thru ....

Having nesting boxes in an avairy and young birds is inviting them to breed and make babies too young. If you notice flirtacious behaviour from the young ones they must be removed until they are over 12 months of age. Failing that remove the nestboxes. Colony style breeding is full of pitfalls and deaths.

The little hen doesnt sound good. She would have been eggbound before that male mated with her. I have seen it happen when I used to colony breed ( I wont anymore ).............a young hen sick from being eggbound and trying to push an egg out must give out signals of some sort as I have seen males line up to try and mate with a young hen in exactly that condition. Sounds like she may not make it from the description of the clear liquid regurgitation.

Urgently now you must follow lonebudgies advice...very important you act fast.

As well as the lamp to provide warmth a shallow dish of water could help by increasing the humidity in the air. Good luck, she doesn't sound great :o
