Arthritis/joint Problems

Hello

I haven't posted for a while but I always enjoy looking at the pics.

I am writing because my Loui is having some issues with his joints.

Sunday he would grasp with his left leg and didn't want to use it, so I took him to my vet on Mon. he told me it could be arthritis , his joint felt stiff and to keep him quiet and see how he does. He seemed to be doing a lot better up until yesterday, but today he is not grasping with his right leg, I don't know if its because he was using it so much that it gave up also, so he is not grasping with either one. I am keeping him quiet as dr ordered. He is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom.

I was wondering if any of you had similar problems and what did you do to try and keep your birdie comfortable, or what treatment did you do.

Thank you so much any advice it helpful. I hate to see him to mopy ;)

how old is Louie?

What type of perches do you have in his cage?

Did your vet do an x-ray? I ask because sometimes there is a tumor internally that can be causing the leg weakness vs arthritis. You can not feel for tumors in their abdomen like you can cats and dogs because their keel bone goes all the way down and protects this area I received that info from our avian vet. I didn't realize that until he told me.

Did you go to an avian vet? I ask because regular vets usually do not have the knowledge like avian vets do with birds, I can tell you I would not take my bird to my dog/cat vet they wouldn't have a clue but a vet even if they are not registered but sees birds on a daily basis and I mean like 5-10 birds a week have more knowledge then 1 that will see them just because.

I know I ask a lot of questions but I think a 2nd opinion should be seeked by a bird vet, that is just my view though ;)

I agree with Elly and what she says about other internal issues causing leg weakness. It is very common and often mistaken for arthritis.

Thanks guys.

I was planning to take him to an avian vet today (I took him to my regular vet where I work)

But Loui passed away last night..... Perhaps he had a tumor like you mentioned, this came too sudden, he was doing great last week... He was about 6 or 7 yrs old

I miss him already :D

I am very sorry to hear that...sometimes it happens all too quickly from first showing any symptoms to the end and a bad result. Big hugs :angel1:

Oh I am so sorry to hear this :D, experiencing a loss so quick with Pretty I know how fast it can happen. One minute they are okay, then they seem a little sick and then they are flying over Rainbow Bridge. Big hugs to you he was a very handsome fellow.

I'm so sorry for your loss of your beautiful Loui... (((((hugs))))) from me xxx

I am so sorry. Loui is pain free and in a happy place now.

Fly free Loui.

Thanks everyone!

I miss him so much, he was such a gentle little boy, Something's missing in the house without him.

Lizzy seems to be doing okay, I think she knew it was going to happen, I had to show her Loui before I took him away (he was in a cage next to her) she seemed to know something was wrong.

I don't know if I should keep her as an only bird now, I am not ready for another one yet.

She's kind of a wild child, poor Loui was so patient with her.

Thanks for "Listening"

anytime feel free to even PM me I went through this similar situation just a year now, the 15th of this month Pretty passed away, I decided not to get another bird and Merlin has been doing wonderful sole. HUGS

Any time!!! We are all here for you. Many of us have lost a loved one and know what you are going through. That's why this forum is so great. Like minded people, sharing similar experiences. If you end up getting another one, you will know if and when the time is right. Some birds, as Elly's Merlin do wonderfully as a solo flyer, others like the company. It's a decision only you can make. Hugs for you :) Maesie xxx

Thank you all!

I was a petsmart today and went to look at the birdies, they were so cute. But still I had Loui in my mind the whole time, I can't believe how much this little guy ment to me, he was my only "boy", all of my other pets are girls.

Lizzy seems to be doing okay, I take her out for a little bit every day, I put some toys in her cage, but she ignores them, I have so many toys for them, and they never played with them. She likes to shred the paper at the bottom of the cage.

If I do decide to get another one eventually, I'll probably pop in for advice. But for now she'll be a single girl.

Elly, Im sorry about Pretty, I think I remember him when you got him, I haven't been in the forum for a while, I'm glad Merlin is doing okay, he is so handsome.

mine where never big toys players either, hugs...if you ever want just PM.
