Posted March 7, 200817 yr I have been reading your forum for a few weeks now because a few of my budgies have scaly face and i read on here that a product called SCATT will get rid of it. So i looked around on some onine stores to see who had it and i found one website that did www.pets-megastore.com.au so i went ahead and ordered some but i just got an e-mail this morning saying they can't post this product in Australia. So i was wondering if anyone here knows of any online stores that sell it or any other product that will get rid of scary face?
March 7, 200817 yr Author I have been trying to find a avian vet close to me but i can't seem to find one. I was hoping i would just be able to order something for it online.

March 7, 200817 yr Hello and welcome. If you cant find the medicine you are after... I have effectively treated mild scaly face with Castor oil. use a coton tip and treat twice a day for about 3 days - careful not to get the oil in the eyes, nose, feathers or beak. Treat the legs too. then repeat in about 2 weeks to kill baby mites that may have hatched.
March 7, 200817 yr Author I am in South Australia in a small country town about 2 hours out of Adelaide. Thank you Liv i am probably going to have to try that as it seems like i am not going to find SCATT or anytime soon, it's just going to take awhile to treat them all.
March 7, 200817 yr you shoudl be able to buy ointment from a petshop near by, if worst comes to worst ask them to locally post it to you if they're too far away Edited March 7, 200817 yr by *libby*
March 7, 200817 yr Author I'll have to make some calls to see what petshops around here have what. Liv, have you ever found anything around here that's just the one drop between the budgies shoulders? Because it's going to be hard to catch them twice everyday to treat them with the Castor oil because there is about 10 of them with it and they are all in a big aviary, they don't have it too bad yet just a bit around their beaks.

I'm sorry, but i haven't had to look for that kind of medicine, so i cant help you there . The lady in the local Gawler petshop is really nice... she might be able to help. In 14 years I have only ever had 2 birds that had mites in the past and once treated (with castor oil) have never had them back again **TOUCHES WOOD!** **EDIT** I would also seperate ALL your infected birds from the healthy ones as the mites (as you would know) are very contagious Edited March 7, 200817 yr by **Liv**
March 7, 200817 yr I disagree with the highly contagious viewpoint. I treat as I find in my aviary. I treat incoming birds also. I have never had scalyface rage through the aviary due to one bird or two having it. I have even had a parent feeding babies that had scalyface and the babies did not get it. Scalyface seems to stay dormant in birds and occurs when other things bring them down, whether it be illness or moulting etc. I would not think you need to seperate the birds. But as I have had hundreds of birds and learnt this along the way....maybe I am wrong ?

Thanks. i really thought those pesty little mites were contagious, but its great to know they dont seem to be
March 7, 200817 yr I agree with Kaz. I have never seen it spread. I use Baby Oil but as Libby said, try not to get it in their nostrals, eyes or ears.
