Posted March 2, 200817 yr Hi everyone, I am new to the breeding budgie scene- i have 8 budgies in a outdoor aviary 6 are paired up i had 6 eggs in two boxes and 5 in another until i just got home and noticed 2 eggs smashed on the floor and when i opened the box the other 4 had cracks in them 5 were developing well, they were all from the same hen who up until now was looking after them quite well i am unsure if it was her that has cracked them or the remaining unpaired hen i have no idea what to do in this situation i removed the cracked eggs but was wondering if i should remove the other eggs and other nesting budgies to protect them? I would love to hear from anyone who has some suggestions to what i should do. thanks for your time
March 2, 200817 yr This is the problem you face with colony breeding. One bird lays eggs and another gets in there and smashed them. You have two choices - leave them there and hooe for the best, or move them and the breeding pair to an individual breeding cabinet. You should know that if you move the eggs, the henmight not go back to sitting on them
March 5, 200817 yr Author Hi everyone, i have another problem the budgie that i think ate the eggs died today it started to get really drowsy and i thought it was egg bound but i checked it and it did not seem to be that and then it started to go paralised slowly could this be egg poisening or maybe a disease or something? Thanks again

Thanks again Its possible that when your bird was eating it has inhaled a seed or husk and this has blocked the air way , The bird will go into a comatised state with its head retracted back and finally die. It would be best to keep a close eye on your other birds though , incase its a disease .
