Big Grey And His Tiny Hen....

Did you break open the other eggs that didnt hatch to see if they were fertile ? I have found some hens dont sit on the other eggs once a certain number of chicks arrive and therefore the other eggs dont hatch...chick dies in shell.

Will be interesting to see who fathered who at the end :grbud:

I took the photo today and the unhatched eggs are untouched as you can see :D

I normally leave the eggs alone for quite some time because i dont record when they where layed etc.

I know these ones wont hatch now though, so what do i look for when i open them???

If you are absolutely sure they wont hatch...break them open to see if they were "clear" eggs or ones with chicks that have died in shell. It looks like you have two clear eggs there and the other two may have chicks in them. Depending on the age of the two in the nest...there may still be hope for the two remaining fertile eggs ....fingers crossed ....maybe ?

The chicks are 7 and 8 days old...

If there is a chance they could still hatch... then i will leave them for now :D

You may well end up with another two chicks.

Is this the only couple you have nesting ???...

Starchy and Magoo l( mine ) had 3 eggs un hatched and I have placed them in another nestbox

(as only had 1 egg) so if they will hatch then there is a better chance with another mum sitting on it

Thats a great idea :D Sadly I dont have any sitting hens though :). my 3 hens are all busy with young chicks now. The weather is very hot here. It's been 40*C for the last 4 days and the next week it's forcast to be between 36 and 40. Do you think the eggs will be warm enough if the hen isn't sitting on them during the day??

Some eggs that look neglected end up hatching as the hen would be sitting at night. Who knows...weirder things have happened. If you look closely at the whiter eggs and if you see a ring marked around one end of them ( colour change ) then they are no good.

I have seen my fair share of yucky dark 'ringed' looking eggs with my cockaties. These eggs are still looking white and not "rotten".

I really hope they hatch - but even more so i hope that atleast 1 chick is BG's!!!!

**Fingers, toes, legs, eyes crossed** :)

I have never had an age gap of over a week between chicks before... will it be okay?? do i need to give the chick special attention to ensure it gets fed etc????

Oh and the second oldest chick has just opened its eyes - they are RED!!! What dose that mean????

Here is a picture :D

redeyes.jpg

Might i add... I have never had a chick with red eyes before.... so perhaps this is BG's chick....???? the other 2 possible dads have never had any babies with red eyes

RED EYES-

I guess ALBINO, or LUTINO

to bad u live in Australia, otherwise we could have switched

Are they red or plum ?

Kaz - AKA - Super woman with X-ray eyes lol I had no idea what you were talking about. How can you tell the colour of the chicks eyes when they are shut tight. I then I looked at a day old chick from another box that i know doesn't have recessive babies and... OMG your right they are 'plum'... well not BLACK like the chicks from the other nestDose That mean BG's not the dad????
They are plum.....Red eyes are a lot brighter red. :)

So i guess that means that the chick will be Cinnamon or recessive then :) - mum is recessive

I have had cinnamon chicks before, but dont remember seeing this colour of eye before - very cool :D

Whatching chicks grow is like unrapping a birthday present REALLLLLLY slowly - "OOO, OOO, OOO what will it be!!!!????!!!!" hehehe :D

Sadly i think i have to put my money on Pop... What do you think?

You are probably not going to know at all really unless you put big grey and the DF dom pied hen somewhere together to breed that isnt in a an aviary and try for round two. You especially need to seperate the hen for a fortnight or so to be sure if she goes with big grey that she is producing only his babies.

The chicks you have could well be from her and Big Grey..........or POP.

The intricacies of breeding in an aviary colony style....you will never know :D

I have 10 new chicks to fledge in the next few weeks... my flock is the biggest it's ever been, i have reached 30 :D and because i am not selling any of my birds i consider my aviary full. I am removing any new eggs that are laid and i will be removing the boxes as they empty... no more breeding for a while for me - well at least until i can have a bigger aviary hehehe :P

Cute piccies! I have a hen in a box at the moment who hatched 3 babies........then 2 more a week later. The size difference was amazing. They are all doing very well though :)
