Hi all,

I have a similar problem to Gazebo_dude with a bit of a difference. My bird all of a sudden appears to have lost strength in her legs. I will find her basically laying on perches. She doesn't seem to have had an accident as there is no evidence of an injury and is otherwise fine. Sometimes she behaves perfectly normally and is able to stand on her feet and jump around on perches etc. She is bird I inherited, she is quite large and has very large feet.

sorry Elly not able to post picture. the bird has been doing this for about 4 days and we have had for about 2 months and this is the first tinme she has done it

Sometimes hens develop this problem and it can be associated with egglaying and or problems with their female egglaying parts. Might pay to get her checked by a bird vet. Meanwhile a calcium supplement like calcivet will help.

I agree with Kaz, a trip to the vets would be a good and safe option. I've always found that it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your birds health. I hope that Gazebo_Dude gets back to normal soon.

What do you mean by 'laying on perches'? Do you mean squatting? Have they stopped working completely, as in she can no longer perch, or is it just weakness? Is it one leg or both? Which part of her legs have stopped working? (Sorry for the barrage, the more we know the better).

 

If it's not trauma, then it could be something else compressing the spinal cord. Budgies commonly get kidney tumours and this can cause paralysis in one or both legs. As Kaz said it could be something to do with an egg or the reproductive system. Osteoporosis and some infections can also cause leg paralysis. These are extreme cases. She could also just be tired or generally sick if she's squatting on the perch.

Birds are notorious for trying to look fine and behaving normally when they're sick. I believe a bird vet check is best.

If this just started like everyone said I wouldn't wait much longer but get her to the avian vet as soon as possible, if you don't know where your closest avian vet is we do have a look-up in the FAQ section. Whenever a bird starts acting strange is is very likely due to a health condition and should be looked at by an avian vet.

Hi my budgie lost use of both legs for no reason. No trama or anything. At first It could stand on the perch using one leg but a couple days ago It can’t and it’s just lying on some of the perches. It can’t use its feet at all. It’s been able to fly around but I see that it’s butt seems clogged badly and I cleaned It the first time but it’s so stressful to catch her because he isn’t used to humans and is quit scared of us. I feel like I’m doing more harm in trying to catch her. I honestly don’t know what to do this budgie has a best friend who’s been sticking by her side. I’ve always had happy budgies. I can’t take her to the vet so I really don’t know what things I can do to help ;(((
