Injured Wing

Hi,

I've got two budgies, Ezekiel and Jeremiah.

I recently needed to clip their claws as i noticed they were getting long, so i had to hold them, which they didnt like at all.

In the process, one of Jeremiahs feathers on his wing is now sticking out quite firmly from his wing and he's not flying as well as he used to...... he seems to be in pain when he flies... :( ... He's fine when not flying though.

I can't take him to the vet yet because i have no time till the weekend.

Does anyone know if the feather can be left alone and fall out on its own or should it be removed?

Here are some pics of poor Jeremiah:

Thanks in advance for any advice......

That has happened to my budgies a couple of times. Its probably just molting it or was loose and is falling out. I would just let it fall out by itself- there is really nothing else you can do. Just DON'T pull it out. The budgie will pull it out itself if it wants to and if it hurts it will just leave it alone until it does. If it draws blood then you will need to do something about it quickly because losing blood can kill a budgie in a short time because they really only have a little bit of blood in their bodies.

Cornflour can help stem bleeding so perhaps get some ready?

Hi,

From the photo it doesn't look to drastic, it sounds like when you caught your little friend you accidentally bent one of his secondary flight feathers out of place.

It looks a lot worse than it really is, he probably finds it more uncomfortable than painful and it will unbalance his flying a little, so don't panic !

My advice would be to either leave it and he will sort it out himself eventually or if it really worrys you, catch him again , carefully spread his wing and smooth the feather down.

You may need to enlist someone elses help with this to ensure you don't damage the little fella any more.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Mike

Thanks for the replies....... :bluebudgie:

I must say i was a little worried.............

I've tried to smooth it down, but its quite firmly sticking out....... It can't be that bad though because hes often squeaking and playing with Ezekiel......

He isn't bleeding, so that's good....

I think i'll leave it and let him take it out as suggested.

Thanks again everyone.... you were all very reassuring...... and with creatures as small and fragile as budgies, it can be a worry when they're not themselves..... :D

Take care.

Yeah - One of mine - Clyde - has a habit of moulting a primary wing feather alternatively from one side and later from the other. When he is flying - the fuller wing generates more lift and so he curves in flight. To compensate he twists his body so he seems to fly crabwise across the room.

The next week when he is uneven the other way - he twists the other way in flight.

Just occassionally he is even and flies straight. I think he surprises himself when he does!

i've never heard of flying crabwise before!

i've had a bird that had a feather stick out like that before. it fell out after a couple of days, though.

What happened with that feather? One of my birds had a bent wing feather like that not too long ago. She ended up gnawing the broken part off. I think if it bothers him he will chew it. It shouldn't hurt unless it's a blood feather, and from your description I don't believe it is. He may just find it slightly annoying, but I don't think it should affect his flying any.

Hi everyone!

Just an update on that problem with the feather my little budgie friend (Jeremiah) was experiencing.....

It's finally fallen out... Either that or he or Ezekiel have plucked it out.....

Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel are fine now, health-wise. They're both a bit jumpy, which they have been for a while and i want to try and change that... I'd like to share and discuss some of my experiences with others here about their behaviours and temprament. Will i need to start a new thread?

Thanks again for all the feedback to this problem...
