I’ve Stopped Buying Birds:

Featured Replies

Posted

I checked the local pet shop out while in town yesterday [as usual] & to my surprise they had quite a good looking male Texas Clearbody…so guess what... I bought it for some new blood…it looks similar to some of my birds I bought & bred this year & probably is related in some way, but probably not as close as the birds I have. One of the best breeders of TCB's lives in the next town, so probably came from that source in some way. What do you think?

Looks very handsome - What a find!!!!!

I NEVER walk/drive past a petshop without having a look - you just never know what they might have :D

I picked up this boy from a petshop - he is very handsome too!

Yes I agree Liv, yes your Spangle is really nice too, I saw him before.

Nice pickup Norm,

I too have found a diamond among the rough. Was at the pet shop ( there getting dog stuff ) when I saw about 6 birds just brought in. Five cocks, one hen was sitting there blowing her head. Couldn't leave without her. I have been feeding her up on vitamins and chick weed for about two months. She is just coming into condition. One or Two rounds is all I need.

You have to watch new birds as there is sometimes a reason why they have found there way to the pet shop. I'm hoping that they thought this bird was getting too old.

Maybe didn't lay last year, as birds get older they need a longer break in between seasons. As all my birds are new, I will have to watch them all very carefully.

Good luck with the Texas!

He's very handsome!

Nice looking bird there. He is giving me the evil eye though !

He's a beauty Norm. He has what a lot do not possess and that is length and the perfect posture on a show perch. You need birds like that for your breeding program. Breeders often cull good birds. In their mind they have better birds that they are keeping. Or with the hen that throwback has, they only seem to use their hens until age 2 so when and where they cull these birds gives others an opportunity to get some good birds. Congrats Norm on your lovely TCB

Thanks guys...yes Throwback I understand what you mean I have bought a few birds from pet shops that looked good & also from breeders & soon found out why...as never got an egg or fertile egg out of them...we can only but hope. [sigh].

No wonder Nicknack you took all the CAKE!!!

Norm and Liv WOW they are beautiful, you don't find that in our pet shops here at least in my part of the US.

Thanks :hap:

I think I was lucky with mine - he has ring that says he's 14 ('94) years old hehe. I have been told by other memebers that he is more like 3-4 years old. YEAH!! and now i think he has a hen with eggs!!! :hap:

Oh yes I remember that post with the ring date and issue...he is most beautiful :), I couldn't pass him up either.

Throwback I really like that hen that you picked up, I hope you have success with her.

Liv I hope those eggs are fertile.

Thanks Norm, I hope so too. I think he has mated with that tiny little white hen i didnt want him with (colony breeding :bluebudgie: ) and now she has 4 eggs. I dont know how to check for fertility - i have always used the hatch = fertile, don't hatch = clear method hehe.

I still haven't found him a nice hen yet, now my CT cages are free i can go and have a look around. These eggs/chicks might be a good test to see if he is fertile  - the hen is a really good mother, she has had some really nice chicks with another cock in previous clutches  - Fingers crossed they hatch.

That's right Norm,

You can buy a bird at a premium price and have a lot of trouble!

I'm sure people think I have a story for everything, but breeding budgies since I was a kid you do experience a lot!

I had a Finney hen, 100% UK. That was one of a syndicate that I bought into! I had high hopes for this hen to improve my Dom pieds. I put her to a Grey green dom pied, all seemed well for a week or two.

Then one morning I came out to check on them and found my GG pieds body in one end of the cage and the head in another.

I thought maybe he got his head caught and waited a couple of weeks than put another of my better pieds in with her again a week later the same thing happened!! SHOCKED! I went to remove her to put her in a cage so I could clean up again when she latched on that hard blood from my hand started to drip!!

Now I have had some hens that could draw blood, but not like this. I had to let go and she escaped. I watched her fly around for a while wondering if I could catch her when some kind of Hawk snatcher her. Just deserts you might say! I bid get more Finney birds that I didn't have any trouble with! So you can buy trouble!

Wow ... a BLACK WIDOW BUDGIE ... MATE TO KILL ! Sounds like a bad James Bond Movie. She be a NASTY BEASTY BUDGIE ! Maybe she wanted some cake & was miffed cause she was denied.

Anyway, just to let you know ... I didn't eat the cake. Liv says a "sniffer dog" at the airport ate it. Which is sad because I arrived in your lovely country by boat. She sent the cake to the wrong place & I guess we all lucked out.

Now nobody has cake ... except some poor dog who is prolly sick from eating nasty vegemite cake.:

Well I had some back luck that TCB that I bought last week was dead on the floor of its cage this morning. It was such a nice Yellow colour on it’s breast, but it was a heavy breather & didn’t have a ring [maybe it was cut off] so it might have been an old bird, I guess that’s the chances you take when you buy birds.

sorry to hear Norm. But I did have to laugh and shake my head when I read your title- "stopped buying birds" never heard such a false statement!!

What a pain about the Texas Norm. You get your hopes up and to have them dashed...happens a lot in show budgies. Sorry to hear :D
