Posted February 18, 200817 yr i was sitting in the loungeroom this morning and could hear one of the budgies talking to himself and mumbling"hello Tweety" and wolf whistling and i thought it was Tweety and was worried that he was not talking clearly and maybe having Runt with him will stop him talking so i went to the cage and was totally amazed that it was Runt talking not Tweety.Through me talking to Tweety and Runt listening to us, he has started talking. i think it is fascinating and am wondering has anyone heard of it happening before. i tried to video him but he stop when i got the camera out. February 19, 200817 yr that would have been neat if you had caught it on tape. oh well, maybe next time you will get lucky :glare: it seems like whenever you want to catch something on tape or snap a picture of a budgie, they always seem to sense it and moves or stops doing it
February 19, 200817 yr my young lori lala imitates Kiki's talking, she's working on her wolf whistle atm :bluebudgie:
February 19, 200817 yr Charley talks really well but to catch him on camera or tape is very rare!! I've tried all sorts of things, lying on the floor and holding my camera up, or standing with my back to him pretending to not be interested in him, with camera poised.. but he "senses!!!" that I'm trying to "trap" him! Its so frustrating isnt it when you can hear these clever words and phrases, yet they stop instantly when you want to capture it. I wish I knew how some of the clever talking and dancing birds on You Tube are filmed strutting their stuff!!! :bluebudgie:

February 19, 200817 yr I got Pretty talking on camera after a while of him talking and he felt comfortable. If you keep working with the camera around him he will get comfortable. I have Pretty talking on the forums in the budgie pics.

I have Pretty talking on the forums in the budgie pics. that is a good idea but when i get the camera out to take photos or film the birds, i have my 4 and 2 year old saying"take a photo of me,take a photo of me" and then Tweety and Runt stop what they are doing and watch my kids.it probably will not be long and the budgies will be repeating that phrase.Tweety went through a stage where he was constantly saying "mummy" but he has stop that word, thank goodness.
February 19, 200817 yr (Laughing out loud) I know exactly what you mean mine are older 7 and 9 so I can do it when they are in school now because they are very jumpy too and then Merlin watches them.
February 19, 200817 yr Author i also have a 9 and 12 year old so with 4 kids and the 2 cats in the house it is so hard to find time when it is quiet to film them.
February 20, 200817 yr Most of the budgies are hollering pretty, pretty, pretty these days so I don't know who started it and when they dropped the "bird" part of it, meaning pretty bird..
February 20, 200817 yr Its funny how they drop certain words.. and seem to keep their favourite ones! Charley often drops his "scratch my" and has retained the "tummy, tummy, tummy!!" which he says over and over again. Also often drops his "bad bad" and says only "charley is a boy! boy! boy!" Its almost as if he can think and indeed is thinking "i really love that word TUMMY!!!... TUMMY TUMMY TUMMY!! " .....and "what a great word is BOY ... BOY BOY!!" Other times its as if he's doing some kind of vocab homework.. he'll sit there, shoulders hunched (concentrating!) and goes .. "boy... scratch.... tummy.... hello.... charley... bad bad... bye bye.. pretty.. clever.. budgie..." He's a very entertaining little man!!
February 20, 200817 yr Author they are funny when they are learning to talk, when we started teaching Tweety his name he started saying twit not tweety so now he will sometimes say "hello Twit" to me when i uncover him in the morning.

February 20, 200817 yr Author what i have always wonder is if budgie can learn any work you teach them or do you have to stick with easy words, they seem to pick up words ending with "y" sounds easy.
February 20, 200817 yr I know there are some words that are harder for them that start with certain constanants and such but I am don't remember what they are.
February 21, 200817 yr what i have always wonder is if budgie can learn any work you teach them or do you have to stick with easy words, they seem to pick up words ending with "y" sounds easy. I am amazed at the sounds birds can make considering they dont have lips!!! Charley's words for example....like Bad Boy, Pretty Budgie, Bye Bye.. (you try saying them without moving your lips!!) and other sounds like "Scratch" where he emphasises the "SCRRRRRRRRRRRRRatch" .. it took him a little longer to master "woopsadaisy!!" but he's got that now too. He can definitely speak better than I can whistle!!!!!!!!
