Posted February 14, 200817 yr my little budgie boy has got arthrits (its definately arthritis). just where the leg comes out of their body. he is 1 year old, and otherwise okay. he is behaving normall, exept that he does not use his bad foot much(never puts weight on it) it all started like 15 days ago, i saw his leg was inflamed- so i cought him, and looked at his footty. under his toe there was a little blood. and ontop (right ontop) it was inflamed. so what can i do? there r no vets where i live
February 14, 200817 yr It sounds like an infection from an injury and not arthritis. The reason I say this is that you have obviously a bird with broken skin from an injury and that would be causing the swelling and redness. Redness can also be an indication of blood poisoning. The infection needs to be treated immediately especially if the budgie has blood poisoning and may cause loss of toes if the blood supply to the foot has been compromised. Do you have anything to treat the injury with if a vet is not an option ? Edited February 14, 200817 yr by KAZ
February 14, 200817 yr I agree with Kaz it can be bumblefoot too where the foot is inflammed because they don't have enough of different size perches and their feet are not exerised. Was the bird taken to an avian vet for confirmed arthritis?
February 14, 200817 yr If it only happened, are you sure that he wasn't bitten by another bird during a fight? You could bath its foot with salt dissolved in water it may help. It wouldn't be normal to have blood if it was arthritis. Edited February 14, 200817 yr by Norm
February 15, 200817 yr I would keep an eye on the leg for possible infection. If it is warm and very red you are looking at an infection and treatment will need to be done or else it can spread and make your budgie even sicker.
February 15, 200817 yr i read a book about budgues, and there they had diseases, 1 of them was arthritis. the picture was similar to what my guy has. that why i thought it was arthritis
February 15, 200817 yr hmmm...honestly the bird is way to young to have arthritis if you told me he was like 12 or 16 I would opt to say okay but the way it sounds arthritis is inflammation of the joints and there is no open wounds with arthritis. I believe there is an injury that needs to be treated.
February 15, 200817 yr Rarely is arthritis spoken about in budgie terms with regard to young birds. Your bird has been injured and has an infection and it needs urgent treatment. You were mistaking the redness of an infection for the redness displayed in an arthritic older budgie or a budgie with splayed legs. Edited February 15, 200817 yr by KAZ
February 15, 200817 yr keep an eye on it in case it gets worse but again it is not arthritis what type of perches do you have in your cage? Also he could have gotten it caught on something or like Norm said another bird could have nipped.
February 15, 200817 yr There's many injuries Where the birds symptoms can look similar. I would not jump to conclusions about arthritis... especially at such a young age like elly said. Keep it fed well, and do the best you can for the bird good luck. Even a normal vet may be able to help with this situation though.
February 15, 200817 yr Doesn't sound too good. Keep an eye on it. As the others said. I wouldn't expect to see arthritis in such a young bird. It can also be dangerous self diagnosing an illness... in birds, pets in gerenral and humans. Posting photos on a forum such as this might be a better idea.
