Posted February 13, 200817 yr i am so excited, my friends are going away this weekend and have asked me to look after their budgies which happen to be 2 of the 4 i handraised.i sold them 6 weeks ago and i still miss them, they are the only budgies i have handraised so it will be nice to have them for the weekend.i have not seen them since i sold them.i am hoping Runt remembers his brother and sister and play nice.
February 13, 200817 yr sounds like lots of fun - I hope you have a fantastic weekend with your babies!!!!
February 13, 200817 yr Author i will be taking lots of pics as well as vacumning lots, Tweety and Runt are moulting as well as her 2.
February 14, 200817 yr That's great, it's really good that you can 'keep in contact' with your hand raised bubs. Have fun vacuuming!
February 14, 200817 yr Author they arrive this morning and i have them till monday , it will be great to see how much they have grown.i dont mind the vacumning, it is worth it when you see how much they love their free time. i had to shake all these pin feathers off my pillow last night before i went to bed.
February 15, 200817 yr When I was a kid we babybird sat a neighbors bird. It was in our house with 5 kids for over 3 weeks. We bombed that bird with attention. The neighbors came back & collected their little birdy & that night they were sitting at their dinner table & stunned to find their bird spoke. FOR THE FIRST Time since they owned him for a year ... their little budgie spoke. And he swore like a drunken sailor. ( my brothers were older & had a vocabulary that made a church deacon blush ) It was pretty funny. So I guess you will be teaching your ex-babies some new words Deb ? Some NICE WORDS ? (Laughing out loud)
February 15, 200817 yr Author they only learn nice words in our house, my youngest child is 2 so my oldest have to watch what they say because she repeats everything. Tweety my pet budgies talks to the other budgies so he will probably be teaching them to talk . they had their first play together last night, Tweety and Runt tried to play with them but they decided it was more fun to chase and tried to bite Tweety so Tweety spent freetime sitting on my shoulder talking to me.
February 16, 200817 yr Sweet Deb ! So you are having a good time with your ex baby's. Enjoy. I didn't know if one birds talking would make another bird speak ... I always thought that the other birds that didn't talk would influence the speaking budgie to revert back to being a non speaker again.
February 16, 200817 yr Author Sweet Deb ! So you are having a good time with your ex baby's. Enjoy. I didn't know if one birds talking would make another bird speak ... I always thought that the other birds that didn't talk would influence the speaking budgie to revert back to being a non speaker again. I have been having a great weekend with the budgies, i have spent alot of time ducking my head, i have a hallway in the middle of my house and the budgies think it is fun to chase each other in the hallway so it is funny when you walk into the hallway and see a line of birds flying towards you. i am been very fortunate that even though most birds stop talking when given a friend, Tweety does not talk as much but still talks and talks more to Runt than to me but that is a worry when they are both males and Tweety's favourite phrase is " who's a pretty boy"
February 16, 200817 yr It can go both ways with talking. It is more common for them to stop talking but I also think it depends on when they started talking and how strong of a talker they are. Pretty stopped when I got Merlin but he had only been talking for like 2 months but Merlin is now talking since Pretty passed.
February 16, 200817 yr Now, if we introduce a new bidgie, we quarantine. When we bring budgies in from outside, are we quarantining? Or do we think that since these 2 have been on their own it is not necessary?
February 16, 200817 yr Author Tweety had been talking for 12 months before i brought the babies into the house to handraise, because he sat and watched me feed them while i talked to him and them, i think when i moved Runt into his cage it did not change his environment enough to stop him talking. With Quarintening i know my birds in the aviary are healthy and since it has only been 6 weeks since the babies i handraised where seperated i did not see the need for quarintining.
February 16, 200817 yr I have this image in my head of you walking down the hallway with a mass of budgies approaching you... and, them waiting at the end of the hall for you to come and saying.."she's comming, are we all ready, on a count of three... three, two, one.... GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
February 16, 200817 yr Now, if we introduce a new bidgie, we quarantine. When we bring budgies in from outside, are we quarantining? Or do we think that since these 2 have been on their own it is not necessary? Dave I had this very discussion with 2 other members because another member was babysitting. Here are the 2 sides. 1. Well I know where this bird came from and it is healthy there so it is okay. 2. Birds no matter where they came from are stressed out when they are moved so putting this stress on them can trigger an underlying dorminant issue OR it may be a carrier of an illness but not have the symptoms and give it to the other birds. I personally agree with #2 I do believe that you need to quarantine no matter what. I wouldn't introduce Merlin to a bird I babysat especially after loosing Pretty at just under 2 years old I would be fearful of any underlying disease. But everyone has their personal views & do what they want.
February 17, 200817 yr I think those birds doing the hallway swoop are practicing Military Attack BIRD-Maneuvers. They are planning a night time assault & are going to force you to take them to your millet stash !
