Posted January 31, 200520 yr Just when I thought he was getting better, his droppings got wet again, and just now, he looked like he was trying to regurgitate in a distressing way, but he could breathe. Just like he'd gotten something stuck in his throat. Thank goodness he's resting now. I'm really scared - I don't wanna lose him! I have bought new seed recently, but he hasn't touched it. It's a different brand from the one before cos that one was out of stock in the supermarket. I've just been sitting close, talking softly sometimes. It's night now, please don't suggest the vet because I don't think I can.... Thanks Ant.
January 31, 200520 yr Ant I'm sorry but he has to go back to the vet-I think this is something way too complicated for us to know what to do.Is it cost? Do you have an animal charity you could take him to? I don't know where you are as it doesn't say in your profile. I wish I had the answer for you but I just don't. Good Luck, Julie
January 31, 200520 yr A big part of taking on the responisbility for taking care of an animal means that you are going to have to have a vet, and yes the vet bills can add up quite high. If you cant him to vet, then all we can do is pray and hope that you can somehow figure whats going on...
January 31, 200520 yr it could be trichomonas it is quite commen in budgies, caused by a very minute parasite, the symptons are nibblingas if they had seed in their mouths, retchingas if they are trying to be sick and actual vomiting with feathers below and on top of its head becoming matted with vomit fluffed up and sitting in the corner with its eyes closed the runny poos could be stress if it is it im afraid it will have to be the vet
January 31, 200520 yr His feathers are matted on top of his head, he's not vomiting much, it looks like saliva. Generally tired too. I will try my best to get him to the vet. I'm in Sydney. It's not that I don't want to take him to the vet!!! It's just I don't know if anyone will pay and take me there. Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I'm staying home from school today, gonna ring up the vet and at least ask for advice when it opens at 9am. Edited January 31, 200520 yr by Antt
January 31, 200520 yr Antt, I understand that you may have trouble finding someone to take you and your bird to the vet, but if you are going to get a pet part of the responsiblity is to take it to the vet if it is required, and it probably would have been a good idea to find out if your parents were willing to pay for treatment if required before getting your budgie. I myself know how expensive it can be if your bird gets really sick, and to some people its "just a bird" but it's more than that and unless everyones willing to realise that, a budgie might just not be suitable Thats just MPO. I hope you will be able to find the money to get your bird to the vet, i dont wish anyone to go through what i had to. Will be thinking of you today please let us know how you go.

If you are going to take on the responsibilty of caring for a pet, you need to make sure you have a vet. There is no excuse when you say "Oh my vet lives 100 miles away I cant get it to them" or "I can't afford it" and of course the "There are no avian vets by me." If there are no vets around you or you cant afford it then you shouldn't have gotten a pet unless you could give it vet care yourself. I'm sorry but thats just that. Without a vet you should realize before you get the pet that you are putting its life at stake by adopting it. I understand that it is hard for you and others right now since its too late to turn back and I know you want to do the best you can to care for your bird. :bluebudgie:
February 1, 200520 yr Okay, he's just been to the vet. The vet can't really find out what's wrong with him exactly. It's probably a crop infection she says but didn't find bacteria in the faeces. So we've been sent home with antibiotics and he got an injection. And he's been crop fed as he hasn't been eating today and yesterday. Will have to go back tomorrow morning to give him another crop feed if he's not eating or is worse. I know you all think I'm horrible - but I really care about Snowy. It's just parents...lucky for us my Dad can help out a bit. I don't know what's going to happen. I myself know how expensive it can be if your bird gets really sick, and to some people its "just a bird" but it's more than that and unless everyones willing to realise that, a budgie might just not be suitable Thats just MPO. What's MPO? I don't wanna imagine it, but what happens if he gets worse and worse? Treatments aren't gonna guarantee him getting better. But whatever happens, we're sticking together. He's resting now, I've got the a desk lamp shining into the cage. For the record, I support all that BudgieLover14 and Budgie_Babe said. Edited February 1, 200520 yr by Rainbow
February 1, 200520 yr I believe MPO means 'my personal opinion' just to clear that up. I am SO glad that you took your bird to the vet. When you have a vet available that knows what you and your bird are going through and knows what you can do to help your bird it is so much easier and relieving isn't it? I understand it must still be hard since he may not look like hes getting better yet, but it may take some time. Antibiotics will probably help- it did when my bird had problems with his droppings. Come to think of it, I actually just made an appointment with a vet for tomorrow since Kiwi's droppings are tiny and dry...very odd looking and they have been like that ever since I got him which was last saturday. If anyone knows what that could mean that would be VERY helpful! Sunny also has strange, wet, and un-circular droppings that look greenish. What could that mean? But anyway lets just hope all of our budgies end up being okay!

What's MPO? Please, no shortcuts. Antt, what exactly do you feed Snowy? I mean, everything. Has he had any dietary changes at all? What are the temps where you are? Any extreme temperature fluctuations? Can Snowy get to any plants that could be nibbled on? Are the feces fully formed, or very loose? Is there a lot of water so that it looks like water got spilled on top of the feces, or does the liquid part have a color to it? Is it clear? How often does he go? Does he have access to the outside, or is he strictly an indoor bird? What's on the bottom of the cage? Do you have a grate, or does Snowy have access to the bottom? It very well could be a bacterial or fungal infection of the crop, but lets rule out dietary or environmental issues first. Those things you have control over. Little bugs in your budgies tummy...not so much. I know how hard it is for you to get a trip to the vets. I will try to help you keep visits to a minimum if I can, okay? It may not do any good, but let's try, okay? Or you can pm me if you want. Yes, if he gets worse, he gets worse. It could happen. But at least you want to try to make him better. Did the vet do a gram stain to check for yeast?
February 1, 200520 yr Well, I've been feeding him just seed for a while, because he was sick before with a fungal infection. I don't think it's wise to give him greens and stuff now cos he's sick and not even eating. Well, it's just been hot and humid last few days. Better now. I turned off the desk lamp for a while cos he's moving his wings away from his body - hot. Faeces are horrible - yellow/green and watery. Vet says it's because he hasn't been eating and liver shut down. He went (pooed) about twice since he got crop fed. Snowy has access to the bottom. No gram stain, I think. Thanks for your help Rainbow, and everyone else too. I have to go study - last year of school for me, stacks of pressure. Will keep an eye on dear Snowz.
February 1, 200520 yr Hi Antt, Listen I've just noticed that you said "I know everyone thinks I'm horrible" This is absolutely not so,personally you come over as a very caring and loving budgie owner and that's great.I think it's just that sometimes we all want to help so much but we're not professionals or vets(apologies to anyone who is-I'm just speaking generally) and sometimes there are things we just can't help with. I'm so pleased you were able to get Snowy to the vet and do understand that of course you would if you could. Please keep us all up to date-we want Snowy to get well just as much as you obviously do. Julie
February 2, 200520 yr Hey things are looking up a bit . Snowy's had some grass (which he loves) and is eating some millet spray now. Yum yum! And he's chirping at some music. But he refuses to touch the normal seed, for now. Now that he's eating I don't think he'll need to have to be crop fed now by the vet. Still, I'll call up later to make sure. Ant. Progress report: Still eating grass and millet spray, not eating normal seed. Alternating between resting and active periods. I know it takes time...... Edited February 4, 200520 yr by Antt
February 4, 200520 yr Sorry I have not been able to respond before now. What's the latest? Liver failure is serious. Did your vet give any medicines or recommend a special diet until the liver can attempt to heal? Luckily, the liver is the one organ that has the ability to regenerate. Do you know if he stopped eating due to liver problems, or if the loss of liver function is the result of another illness? Did the fungal infection ever truly go away? Do you know what caused it? If you don't know, I think I would try to find out from the vet what brought all this on to begin with. On the plus side, at least he is still eating. Do you weigh him to make sure he is maintaining his weight?
February 5, 200520 yr Well, the vet thought that he wasn't eating the normal seed yet due to his throat being sore. But if he's eating the millet, I can't see much difference except some of the other seeds may be a bit bigger. I've never really weighed him before, so I don't know....I will find out. In regards to the liver function, the vet says his liver shut down cos he hadn't eaten for two days - hence yellow poos. His droppings are darker green now, drier too I think.
February 6, 200520 yr I hope your little bird gets better. no tips from me since i dont know much about this but good luck!! Edited February 6, 200520 yr by Abs_Crazy
February 7, 200520 yr rainbow - do you ever stop asking questions? :(Laughing out loud): just kidding! hehe best of luck and im glad to hear snowy's felling a bit better! edit: fixing typos!!! Edited February 7, 200520 yr by oscarchik101
February 7, 200520 yr rainbow - do you ever stop asking questions? just kidding! hehe Um...no! I'm just trying to help. I know a lot of times I forget to ask the vet questions, and if it were my bird those are the ones I would be asking... I always feel like I have to take an active role in my birds healthcare, whether it's preventative maintenance or post-illness care since I'm the one responsible for them. I just assume everyone else is the same. I suppose that's wrong on my part. Antt, I hope I've not offended you by asking so many questions...
February 7, 200520 yr No, no, Rainbow - not offended at all. In fact, very appreciative that not only are you comforting and listening, but also trying to help by asking all these questions! It's good. Thanks. The vet says I should take the food (millet and grass) out in the evening, and put the normal seed in the cage in the morning for half an hour to see if he eats it - if not, put millet in for a bit. Also whistle and say "food" or something for a few days when I put the seed in so Snowy hopefully will begin to associate the seed with "eating" or whatever. And thanks, Abs_Crazy and oscarchik101. (EDIT) PROGRESS REPORT: Snowy is eating the normal seed again! YAY! And today is the last day of his medication. Nearly there I reckon.....just fix up droppings........
