The Start Of The Road...

I cant beleive i have the oppertunity to start my own breeding journal! Lets hope luck is on my side. I found a great small aviary/large cage on a stand that can easily house a pair and their chicks. photos and dimensions coming. Dad has helped me put a nestbox in the top corner (inside the cage, the babies would be vulnerable to wattlebirds etc if the nest box was outside in our case :budgiedance: ) I have natural perches (natives) that go from the back to the front of the cage so they have flight space across, and there are 4 food bowls (2 for water) Now all i need is a hen! as i was discussing in another post (cant remember the name) My newly discovered cock, Zo, is about to become a very lucky boy! heres hoping they get along. http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj73/lo...1.jpg">

more info later!

changed picture to link due to being over the board regulations of 450x450, thank you for understanding :D)

Loreli - any pictures of the cage? keep in mind if you are still hunting for a partner to keep to the quarantine rules first. and of cuase keep reading up on what is needed, it's never a bad idea to re-read things as well until it's clear in your mind what you need to do. and good luck, I hope you have spoken to the rest of the family of what is involved as well. they will be a great help in the journey.

Sorry, my camera is playing up at the moment, but i promise i will bombard you all with photos asap!

The cage is powdercoated and 78cm wide, 84cm high, and 45cm deep. its on a stand so the top finishes at my height.

Sorry about the link :/

Thankyou for your expert advice Nerwen, yes my family are happy, mum helped me choose it and dad helped be build it!

I plan to put the hen in there first for a few weeks then introduce zo from his cage :book:

Sounds exciting. I can't wait to share this journey with you. Just remember to quarintine the new hen for at least 30 days. I'd hate for Zo to get sick because of something his 'girlfriend' gave him! Good Luck with everything and keep us informed! :D

Hahaha! charming way to put the "girlfriend" transmitted disease Maesie :D sounds like she's gonna give him herpes or something :budgiedance: (Laughing out loud) that's a JOKE!!! people :D

Good luck with the breeding Loreli, look forward to pictures soon :)

kinky :D (did you quarintine her?)

Lorelli...quarantine is essential no matter where you buy a bird from. Stresses of capture, moving, and meeting a new budgie, and breeding can bring out hidden illness.

Don't apoligise! At least you're having a go. She is a beauty...I'll try and think of some names for you.

With the pictures/links, if you'd like your actual pictures to be visable on the post without having to follow a link, you can resize them in photo bucket to 320x240 (website, email). To do this click on edit above the photo you want to change, then the resize tab... this will drop down and provide you with several options. You can also upload your photos in this size to begin with. In the top right hand corner (above where you browse for your pics) there is a heading: max image size. Change this to 320x240 website, email. This way all the images you upload will be this size and can be imported straight into our forum. From here, to add your picture to your post, copy and paste the IMG code... and wella. Your image will appear in your post and be the correct size.

Good move :) I have very good reasons for talking about quarantine, having lost birds because I didnt and others on this forum too have lost birds. Recently I was told to put two show birds together in a breeder cage as they were bred by the same breeder ( but hadnt lived in the same aviary for a year ).....a few show breeders advocate quarantining in a breeder cage. I should have known better. Within the amount of time a bird can contract a disease the cock bird went down like a ton of bricks. Virtually overnight he went from well to poopy bottom, runny eyes and died. The hen was a carrier and she looked fine. Looks can be deceiving. A lot of birds can carry horrid diseases but it only manifests itself under stress conditions. That being...catching birds, moving birds, new food, new home, new "pecking order" and breeding.

Sorry to labour the point but I have expereinced deaths when I didnt use to quarantine. Now I know the importance.
