Broken Talon

Featured Replies

My budgie had a little mishap this morning, as I made on another post. I looked a little closer at her foot, and her talon is at a funny angle. Her foot looks fine, and she uses it and climbs with it as usual. She's got a little scab on it, but she doesn't seem to notice it. The talon must be broken right at the cuticle, because it looks completely intact.

Will a broken talon heal fine on its own? I don't really have the money at the moment to take her to a vet, so I'd like some input before/if I do that.

Hey, I'm studying to be a vet, but as a first year I haven't got that much knowledge yet, (Laughing out loud).

I'm unsure from your description where it is broken. If it's just the nail that is hanging beyond the quick and it is not bleeding, then I would guess you could just snip the nail off with clippers so it doesn't get hung up in anything. Or she may bite it off herself. If you mean it's broken right at the toe, yikes! I'd get her into a vet. If she rips it off somehow it will bleed and she will really need attention then. It does not take much blood loss for a budgie to go into shock. Can you post a picture of it? I could probably tell you something better if I could see.

If you don't have the money for a vet you shouldn't have taken on the responsibility of caring for a pet...

you dont always need money to care for your pet, what about the blue cross or some other charity like that.

ATD

I can try to take a picture of it.

I think perhaps it's not broken after all, it looked crooked to me yesterday and it's straight now. I guess I sort of panicked when I saw the blood on her perch. She doesn't seem to notice anything and acts normal, so I think I'll leave it for now, but watch her closely in case it gets worse.

As for the comment that you need money to keep a pet, I don't agree with that at all. I'm a student and also an animal lover. I find it difficult to pay tuition and books on my own let alone other expenses. Budgies are great in that they are very inexpensive to buy and care for, and you get a lot back from them in return (they are such great pets!). I also know that vets will charge insane amounts for even the smallest thing. (part of the reason I'm trying to get into vet school, (Laughing out loud))

I do think her injury is minor, but if it does look like it's posing a major problem, I certainly will see about getting her to a vet because I don't want her to have any trouble.

I'll try to get a picture up tomorrow... And thanks for your input, folks.

very well said, budgies are inexpensive to care for and are very rewarding pets. vet care is not always necessary, sometimes it is nice/better to get some advice from breeders and other pet owners before you decide whether to take action or not.

when i bought my budgie he had a stumpy toe. i didnt notice it at the time but i saw it as soon as we got him home. basically the whole nail was ripped out leaving a little black stump (like a scab) but he never bit at it or anything. when i took him to the vet she gave him antibiotics three times a day for 5 days so if it is as bad as what my budgies was then i would advise you to go to the vet.

p.s does anyone know if the toenail will ever grow back?

the vet clipped one of my old budgie's too close and it bled (he was VERY prone to bleeding, tho!) and so they cauterized (?) it and it fell off. but it grew back. he never acted like he was in any pain - i even separaed him for a few hours (he was like LET ME OUT of this little cage!) but he was fine. even if it doesnt, im sure your bird will be okay. his grew back but never as long as the others.

My budgie was missing a toenail when i bought him (didnt notice it till i was home) when i took him to clip his wings i asked the vet about it and she told me it wouldnt grow back (its true, it hasnt),he doesnt seem to mind missing it though

Yeah that happened to my bird too. He was always missing a toenail. One of his back toes is deformed or he just cant use it for some reason. Feet deformations on budgies seem common. I guess its fine as long as they can walk and perch fine. :bluebudgie:
