Budgerigar Breeding Books

Hi, I am young and would like to breed budgies, I have only had pet ones in the past. Can anyone please suggest a book that is worth buying that includes how to look after budgies, health, breeding etc.? Thankyou.

Also, if I start with a pair, do I buy them as babies or as a breeding pair??? Also, I want to breed purple coloured budgies, does this mean I start with purple adults or different. I think I read somewhere once that one needs to be green and the other blue? Can anyone please explain. Thanks for your time.

Welcome Shan!!

You want A good budgie breeding book that's full of all the latest and greatest advice???

hehehe.

You are looking at it - okay i know its not a book. No book will match the detailed advice you will get right here on this forum :D

Ask anyquestion you want. there are very talanted breeders on here everyday answering everybodies questions.

I was about your age when i started breeding too. Best of luck :glare:

Hi and welcome Shan.

I can't recommend any books, but Liv is spot on when she says you will get very detailed advice on this forum.

I'd keep in mind that before you begin breeding, their or so many things you have to take into consideration.

Money for vet trips, where the babies will go, to name two. You'd be best to check out the FAQ's they are full of useful information.

:D

Here is an on line book that is very very good. The Master Breeder.

It will help you understand breeding and maintenance of a flock.

There are no purple budgies, but there is violet. To breed violets you need a visual violet. Paired to a cobalt you will get violets.

Violets are very hard to breed. As their genetic make up is not quite known untill you test breed them.

Here is an article I did on the violet factor. I hope it helps. ;)

Hi Shan, and welcome

First find the local club and go to there show, they will have some good quality birds for sale. Ask the breeder to help you select a pair of breeders and ask any questions as to the colour that you are looking for. Blue birds come in sky blue, cobalt, mauve and violet which may be the purple that you want. When I was 12 ( a long time ago), I wanted to breed Lutino's but found the genetics very frustrating. Back then there wasn't many books available and what was around was to in depth for a 12 year old. To-day it's a lot easier you can find tables on the Internet that tell you the basic outcome of pairing two birds together. Get your parents to help you search for them.

The Michael Christian book that Lonebudgie recommends is a very good book, with beautiful colour pictures that would make anyone want to start with budgerigars.

I have a couple of spare copies of this book, again ask you parents to contact me and I will send you one free.

Encouraging young people is something that the hobby is not the best at. The kids are the birds future!

Good luck

:D

I agree with DAZ The Master breeder is a great on-line book, In fact I think I might have picked it up from Daz on another post a long way back. Another is nans no tech genetics which explain the way genetics work in a simple easy to understand way. Here is the link

I personally would start with a young pair & let them mature, That way you will get to know your birds.Another point of advice, buy from a breeder like one on this forum, you will get healthier, happier birds. I'm sure someone here lives close to you

Thankyou all for your help, this is great! I live at Mt. Barker South Australia. Is there anyone else at Mt. Barker that might be interested in selling some budgies? Also, how do you find a budgie club and what do you do at them?

:budgiedance: (these are so cute!!)

Try looking up on the South Australian budgerigar club (google it) & contact them for your nearest club. Also make sure you take your parents with you when buying birds from anyone.

Hi, Shan and Shan's Mum. Book is on it's way!

I'm not interested in any money, The book is not new but well worth owning. Not sure if it is still in print, there is a second edition but the changes are just some of the text. The picture's alone will fire her imagination to the possibilities.

All the best and goodluck! :bluebudgie:

-_- Thanks for your help everyone! :D

finding a book on JUST budgie breeding is hard. Hunt in your local library for any budgie books and it will have some basic info, which is a good place to start. a book called Caged and aviary birds has some good information on breeding budgies (and other birds)
