Posted February 9, 200817 yr I have now 10 budgies and they give us such pleasure, however I do have a problem. They waste a lot of seed. I purchased a budgie mix from a very good source and they said I should not have a problem. Well, I still have the same problem. I would love to have your advise. They still have vegies and they love them. I am at a loss what to do about this waste. Edited February 9, 200817 yr by Zenie
February 9, 200817 yr When you say they waste alot of seed... how do you mean? Could you try serving it differently. I used to have my seed in a plastic bird feeder. It has slots down the bottom and when the budgies peck the seeds out more come down. I wasted very little seed this way. I also usually buy my seed from Iversons (local Geelong shop), and have done since I can remember. I find it to be of great quality and price for the size of the bag. Hope this helps!
February 9, 200817 yr Budgerigars are all individuals they will pick to eat what they like and toss the rest out. Some breeders feed their birds seed in different feeders. I feed mine a mixture of Canary, White French, Jap millet, red panicum and hulled oats. I mix the Canary, white French, Jap millet and Red Panicum in to a 20 litre container to hold until I need it. The Hulled oats I feed to the breeders with chicks in a separate feeder. I also add it to my soft food. If you feed them in separate feeders you'll need 5 feeders per flight
February 9, 200817 yr i have 20-25 birds and i go though about 10kg of TRILL seed every fortnight. The waste is very frustrating. I put my feeders on the ground then sit them in a large potplant dish. This helps keep some spillage off the floor, but they still throw it everywhere. :glare: I'm over it though - budgies ARE messssssy
February 9, 200817 yr Hi Zenie , Go through the seed they waste and see if it is a particular type , some seed they dont eat ?? and the seed companies put it in the mix to keep the weight up . Liv also has a good idea place your feeder into a large container to stop them kicking all the seed out on the floor , budgies are fussy eaters and will eat all of a particular seed before eating whats left , you can then blow the husks from the larger container and leave the uneaten food in the tray . I use cat litter trays for this as they are a good size . If it is a certain type of seed let us know or try another mix that doesnt have it .
February 9, 200817 yr I got through about 10kg every week too! I agree they waste a lot, but i sweep it up and give it to the wild birds. That way i get to see the pretty parrots and the wastage doesn't bug me as much!

Me too... we don't have birds as pretty as that, but they're still 'God's birds' (as my granny calls them :(Laughing out loud): )
