Posted February 8, 200817 yr Hi everyone Well I have had Coco for almost two weeks now - thank you to everybody for your advice so far. I am still not sure if I have a boy or a hen (some people suggested hen though) - the previous pics I posted were not very good quality. I finally got a new camera and have taken some new pics. Can anybody tell me if Coco is a boy or a hen, and how old? I had trouble posting pics so I have attached the link http://s244.photobucket.com/albums/gg31/TamandCoco/ PS - The orange stuff on his face is carrot. Tam :grbud: Edited February 8, 200817 yr by Tam

February 8, 200817 yr Yellowface Skyblue Hen but very young. Did you get her from the pet store or a breeder?
February 8, 200817 yr Very young as Daz says. Pity its been clipped so young. I like mine to learn to fly. Some who have been clipped way to young dont get the chance to learn to fly first.
February 8, 200817 yr I am going to say boy.. I agree with the others as he is very young..:hap: Good luck..

February 9, 200817 yr Author Yes I think hen and she will be able to fly once she molts out there should be no problem. Merlin learned okay. That is good to know that she should be able to fly agin. Is there first molt at about 4 months? - Do you have any idea how old she is now? Silly question....I talk to Coco all the time when I am home, thinking she was a he, and in the hope that it would pick some words. Is this still worth doing - is it comforting to the birds to be talked to - or am I just driving my boyfriend crazy for no reason
February 9, 200817 yr I am going to say boy.. I agree with the others as he is very young..:hap: Good luck.. l also say it looks like a boy to me too. the cere looks like it is purple.
February 9, 200817 yr I was going to say boy too at first but then I saw the large white nasal rings I think within a few more weeks it cere will change more and it won't be so on the fence.
February 9, 200817 yr Author I was going to say boy too at first but then I saw the large white nasal rings I think within a few more weeks it cere will change more and it won't be so on the fence. Yeah, it didn't seem to match any of the pictures I saw on determining gender, kind of inbetween. Thanks for your help though - should I post a picture in a few weeks time when Coco is a bit older?
February 9, 200817 yr Yes that would be wonderful and if you can do it in the natural light without a flash that would be wonderful since the flash does wash out the coloring and can make the bird look like a hen when in fact it is a male.
February 9, 200817 yr Author Yes that would be wonderful and if you can do it in the natural light without a flash that would be wonderful since the flash does wash out the coloring and can make the bird look like a hen when in fact it is a male. I will do that then. Thanks Elly

February 10, 200817 yr Author Lady which picture do you mean?Yes I have heard girls can talk too :hap: so keep on talking the more the hear it the better even whistles are excellent because that is the first stages of copying you. Cool then I will keep on talking - she has been so noisy over the past couple of days - definetely not a pretty chrip too! Do boy budgies sound pretty from the start? Or does that come with time? We have lots of birds in the gum trees out the front, so I think that she is mocking them too.
February 10, 200817 yr Author well Bing is chriping more and more now but it doesn't warble or anything, it just has one chirp that it does over and over again, and its the call for another bird like when lorikeets fly over our house they chirp and he/she chrips back but doesnt get a reply, o and Tam, does Coco try to escape from his/her cage? because thats all that Bing does now, it tries to escape through the corner or the cage but he never does... is this normal behaviour to try and escape?Hey Andrew, good to hear that Bing is going well. Yes Coco tries to escape by lifting up the doors by the corner (very cheeky :hap: ) so I had to peg everything shut. She is also quite the acrobat, always doing somersaults and weird stuff, I always worry she is going to break her legs with the strange positions she gets into. Then gets really tired and has some more food and does it all again! I don't know whether it is normal behaviour though - I would say so, they seem quite inquisitiveThe pictures you took are they with flash or natural light? "Elly I was going to say boy too at first but then I saw the large white nasal rings I think within a few more weeks it cere will change more and it won't be so on the fence."Elly can you copy and paste this picture you are talking about please? All of the pics were in natural light - except for the first picture. I will post some more in a few weeks and hopefully it will be a bit clearer whether I have a boy or girl Edited February 10, 200817 yr by KAZ
