Posted February 4, 200817 yr i went to the aviary last night and found a Jack on the bottom of the aviary. it looks like he has hurt his wing but he also has a very full crop. i rang up the vet but cannot get a appointment till tomorrow morning. i have brought he inside to keep him warm but he is still eating and drinking and poos are normal, bottom clean. what i are wondering because he looks bloated and crop is very full should i take his seed away from him.could the injured wing be causing his body not to digest his food.
February 4, 200817 yr he could have an air bubble in his crop, the one on this forum that I know would know what to do is Kaz and she should be waking up soon so you may want to give her a PM.
February 4, 200817 yr Hard to say whats going on but a large crop could be due to canker ( sour crop ) where it fills with gas, or it could even have an impacted crop. Its pure guess work at this point with no photo and not enough symptoms and further examinations by yourself to provide more information. I would say, investigate further....is the enlargement hard or soft, has the bird been vomiting ? and if you are worried seek vet help. Also check the wing over for any feather loss or lumps. February 4, 200817 yr Are you sure that his wing is damaged as sick birds often loose the power of flight & are found on the floor of the aviary.

i took a couple of photos and when i examined him the enlargment is mainly soft with a small hard lump at the base of his crop.he is not vomiting at all. no feather loss and can feel no lumps or breaks in his wings.i could not get a appointment till tomorrow morning at the vets so i am just wondering how do i treat him today while i am waiting. do i still give him seed. February 5, 200817 yr Its great to hear he isn't showing any other symptoms. Could he have swallowed a stone or something else indigestible and have pain from the object not leaving the crop?? Edited February 5, 200817 yr by **Liv**
February 5, 200817 yr Author i am glad he is a male because i can pick him up and examine him and he does not bite me. he has been in the aviary for 2 years now and i have rarely pick him up. his lump does not feel really hard like a stone and i can touch him and he does not seem to be in any pain. he keeps eating all the time and i am worried he might make himself worse. February 5, 200817 yr Author jack became lethargic last night so i am off to the vets this morning, i hope he has some answer for me because he belongs to my sisters children and they could not keep him so i am looking after him and they will be so upset if he dies on me.
February 6, 200817 yr Author The vet says he wing is strained not broken and i have to strap his wings together to keep it still for 2 weeks so it will mend.Jack is not going to like that. The lumps are fatty cysts and he has 2 of them. The vet said they are not too big at the moment but i have to keep a eye on them and if they grow he will have surgery to remove them. Has anyone had cysts in there birds and know anything about them, like what causes them and do they grow quickly and if there is anything i can give him to help him. the vet did not tell me much at all.
February 6, 200817 yr Fatty cycsts are common enough. Also known as fatty tumours, which they can become as things progress, but not always to that degree. I have a bird with them in her wings right now. When squeezed it ejects a fatty creamish substance also containing some ingrown feathers. Apparently they keep reoccurring once happening.  here is an article  http://www.avianweb.com/fattumours.html

Different location to a wing cyst. I woul start on the iodine supplement to the water though. Aska chemist for AQUEOUS IODINE. Just a few drops per litre of water.
February 6, 200817 yr Author do i have to get the iodine from a chemist not pet shop, with his wing because it is not broken just strained the vet said i could strap it or leave it to mend on its own, what would you recommended is the best thing to do, i do not have a avian vet in my area so i just went to a vet who has treat birds so i am not sure if he gave me the right advice.he is in the house and he has a hen in the aviary he was close too and i do not wanting him getting depressed because he is missing the other birds. yesterday he was chirping and calling out but today he just sits quietly.
February 6, 200817 yr A few weeks back My grey cock sprained his wing, he couldn't fly due to it and kept dropping to the ground, we gave him his space so he wasn't frightened and hurting himself and with no treatment it healed itself up fine :hap: Until he was comfortable to fly with it again he used perches and wire to get around the aviary, but now he's right as rain... He'll hold his wing in a position that he himself finds comfortable to heal it
February 6, 200817 yr Author so you left him in the avary with the other birds? my avary is 2.4m square with 10 birds in there, so he has plenty of room to keep to himself if i put him back
February 6, 200817 yr Yep i let him be... with a mainly medical family i know there's not much you can do for a sprain, I wasn't going to strap a wing into an uncomfortable position for him and He was getting around and eating well how he was holding it himself, it was gone within a few days completly :hap:
February 6, 200817 yr He'll do jsut as well in a cage if you want to keep him inside for observation, although it won't exercise his wing as much
February 6, 200817 yr I would not put him back in the aviary. He needs to recuperate. But you could put his hen in with him for company :hap:
February 6, 200817 yr Author just been to the chemist and got the iodine but much do i put in his water. i might leave him by himself for a few days because i think if i put his hen with him i do not think he will do much resting and might make his wing worse :oliveb:

February 6, 200817 yr Good Luck with him Deb. I hope his wing gets better soon so he can rejoin his mates in the avairy!
February 6, 200817 yr Author i have been reading the article about lipomas[fatty cysts]and it was saying the can be genetic so would that mean it would not be good to use Jack for breeding, he is a split recessive pied so i had planned on breeding with him.

Well, I have just had some chicks put down at the vets due to cysts and apparently is genetic.
